Sites and Suburbs in Gaza City
El-Sheikh Ejleen Outskirt

El-Sheikh Ejleen is situated in the south west of Gaza city, it is an overhill place, a cliff like.

Its name is related to above mentioned Sheikh Ejleen. The most important site of this area is the mosaic ground lying on Batshan hill. The site was discovered by chance in 1966 and the mosaic was found to be the ground of a Gazan church in the Byzantine period. The church was ornamented with animal pictures such as lions, tigers giraffes etc. The claim that the church was a Jewish synagogue is strongly refuted by the inscriptions carved on circular medal and meaning "We are timber merchants, the sons of Menamous and Ezirous the sons of the Sanctified Ezeis, we presented this mosaic as a gift to holiest place in Lous of 569."
