An agreement between Gaza Municipality and
fishermen association to promote the fishery sector
Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Gaza Municipality and
fishermen association for developing the needed infrastructure such as the
fishery facilities and port in addition to making some financial support to
fishermen. The aim of this agreement is to promote the fishery sector and
enhance the fishermen steadfastness in front of the current severe crisis
they are facing.

The
Municipality of Gaza implements infrastructure projects in
Gaza city
In
cooperation with PECDAR and various development agencies, the Municipality
has recently started implementing infrastructure projects in Gaza City such
as tiling Palestine Street. funded by World Bank with a total budget of US$
245,000 and development of Khaled Al-Hasan St. funded by World Bank under
the MIDP program with a total budget of US$ 200,000. 27 Aug.
The
availability of raw materials has enabled the municipality to start
implementing these projects, which had been impeded as a result of Israeli
closure imposed on the Gaza Strip.
Signing Memorandum of Understanding with UNDP
On the
25th of August 2002, a memorandum of understanding has been signed between the
Municipality of Gaza
and UNDP for employment generation project. According to MOU, the German
Development Cooperation / KFW will finance the development of Ejdaida
neighborhood (Around Water Well 2) including road tiling, water and sewage
networks with a total budget of US$ 200,000.
The
Acting Mayor of Gaza has thanked the UNDP for their continued support to the
Gaza Municipality. During the last 8 years, substantial progress has been
made in infrastructure and rehabilitation sectors in
Gaza City through
the earlier and currently on-going projects implemented in cooperation with
UNDP with a total amount of more than US$ 15 million. These projects have
generated approximately 80,000 employment opportunities and contributed in
alleviating the extreme hardship of the Palestinian people as a result of
Israeli measures and closure policy.

Meeting with the Neighborhood Committee of Beach
Refugee Camp
Gaza
Municipality
held a meeting with the Neighborhood committee of Beach
Refugee Camp to
discuss the water supply shortage within the Northern Beach Camp in addition
to other encountered problem such as insufficient lighting, solid waste
problem and sanitation.

Belgian municipal delegation visits Municipality of
Gaza
A
delegation representing various municipalities and civil organizations in
Belgium visited Municipality of Gaza to express their solidarity with
Palestinian people and discuss different issues and potential aspects of
cooperation in the future. The acting mayor has presented the current
difficult situation and the encountered problem that facing the municipality
in the meanwhile. After the meeting, the Gaza City Film "The
Phoenix Rises" has been
shown in the main guest municipal hall then a press conference was held with
various press agencies. 19 Aug.

Final ceremony of the third environment summer camp
In
cooperation with UNICEF, the environment awareness section has organized the
third environment summer camp for 15 days. The summer camp included
cultural, theater, sports and recreational programs for participating
children. It aimed to alleviate psychological pressure and suffering of
Palestinian children and to encourage their active participation in the
social life in order to avoid their complete alienation and depression.

Inauguration of “Love Message“ exhibition for
drawings made by Norwegian Children
On the
15th of August 2002 “Love message” exhibition was inaugurated at the Arts and
Crafts Village. The exhibition includes 120 drawings made by Norwegian
children from Twined City of Tromso expressing their solidarity with
Palestinian children in this hard situation as result of Israeli occupation
and measures imposed on Palestinian people.

Aown Shawa name on one of the main streets in Gaza City
In
recognition to the great achievements of the late mayor, Aown Shawa who
passed away on the 30th of November 2001, leaving behind him a
long record of achievements for Gaza City during his presidency from 1994 –
2001, the municipal council has decided to name one of the main streets (St.
No. 8).
