There were a number of municipal councils in Gaza city starting from the Ottoman period in 1893, the British Mandate, the Egyptian administration and ending with the Israeli occupation.

When the Palestinian National Authority took over, for the first time in the history of Gaza, President Yaser Arafat issued a decree to form a new municipal council to run the affairs of the city. At that time, the city was in a very bad condition with no infrastructure.

Since the present council has taken charge of the city, it formed and established a number of new departments, sections and units to build the city on scientific, developed bases. As a result of the increase in construction, the number of the Municipality employees increased to 1,500, including 190 highly educated persons.

These employees work in 11 departments which contain 45 sections. This enables the municipality to provide the different necessary services for the residents of the city and to increase its productive ability and give it an appropriate administrative, technical and financial credibility.
