Passed down from one generation to the other over hundreds of
years, the tradition of crafts in Gaza still plays a strong part in the life of the city.
These traditional businesses produce pottery, bamboo furniture, carpets, embroidery,
tiles, copper, etc. Some of the shops of these craftsmen are still located in their
traditional area: pottery in Daraj, carpets in Shijaya, ironwork in Fras Market. In order
to preserve and revive these traditions, the Arts and Crafts Village was created. In its
traditional architecture constructed from earth, craftsmen are producing and selling
glass, pottery, carpets, embroidery and copper. An art gallery has also been established
which exhibits works from leading Palestinian and foreign artists. Music in Gaza is a
constant component of life, as it sounds almost daily in the streets when the Fadaous
groups accom-pany the wedding processions with their traditional tunes.
As for food, Gaza traditional cuisine is made of a rich composition of
Mediterranean food with the delicious taste of olive oil and garlic in addition to all
sorts of spices,
Rice and meat.
But Gaza is above all the place to eat fish. Directly coming from the
sea, they can be eaten grilled, stewed or fried.
In all cafés
and restaurants, one can also taste the nargile, the tobacco water pipe that is the
traditional after dinner relaxant. |
