GOLDEN OLIVE AWARDS

What is a Golden Olive Award?

The Golden Olive Awards are given to those of Palestine's websites that meet a certain criteria. If you are not a Palestinian or a Palestinian organisation, and you aren't based in the West Bank, Gaza Strip or Jerusalem, and you don't have a website, or if the website you have does not fulfil the criteria described below, you won't get one. Winners of the 1999 Golden Olive Awards were announced on 25 September 1999 - an appropriate date as it is the anniversary of the September 1996 clashes which saw an important development in the Palestinian web scene, the On the Ground In Ramallah Website. Palestinian Internet service providers' websites are not considered for Golden Olive Awards to avoid potential argument with colleagues, although their valuable service is recognised by us all. The logo, which Golden Olive websites are entitled to put on their website, signifies a website based in Palestine that has more than overcome all the difficulties on setting up a site here, and that has provided a well-thought-out, well-implemented, information-rich contribution to the wider community of the World Wide Web. The award is also based on what the website is trying to achieve. For example a daily newspaper website that hasn't been updated for weeks or months is a waste of everyone's time. In 1999, 30 websites out of a possible 204 received Golden Olive Awards. For more detailed analysis of the web in Palestine over the last 12 months, read the special report issued by the Birzeit Webmaster in conjunction with the Golden Olive Awards.

How are they awarded?

Any website in Palestine (see "What is a Golden Olive Award" above) will be considered. A Golden Olive Award will be given to any website that fulfils the first, and most of the other conditions listed below. An autonomous organisation (such as the Birzeit Law Centre) whose website exists on another organisation's site (i.e. Birzeit University's) can still qualify for an award. Basically, a Golden Olive Website will:

  1. contribute significant information as a website in Palestine. - meaning that the site contains: a high volume of material; unique material; or material that reveals the Palestinian national identity. (necessary)
  2. have an attractive design and good navigation. (expected)
  3. be updated as regularly as appropriate. - for example a commemorative website for a particular event is not expected to have updates. (necessary)
  4. be outstandingly original. (optional but helpful)

Why award the Golden Olives?

Four reasons:

  1. To acknowledge the hard work of organisations and their webmasters that has gone into making a successful site.
  2. To encourage visitors to the "Complete Guide to Palestine's Websites" to visit the best Palestinian sites, and to make clear why they are good sites.
  3. To draw attention to the fact that putting a website together in this country is something that was illegal for many years and that there are still obstacles preventing Palestinians from getting wired, that the Internet community should be aware of.
  4. It's kind of fun keeping tabs on all the Palestinian sites.

Where can I see last year's Golden Olive Websites?

Easy. Just go here.

Who awards the Golden Olives?

The Birzeit University Webmaster. We try and be objective though and we do get a lot of second opinions.

What if I have won a Golden Olive?

Congratulations! You are entitled to put the Golden Olive logo on your homepage. You can capture the logo onto your computer from the top of this page by clicking on it with your right mouse button (in Netscape) and choosing the "Save this image as..." option. When you add the graphic to your homepage, insert coding as follows to achieve this:

 <IMG @ SRC="/your-image-directory-name/tree2.gif">

Where the "@" symbol appears above, insert ALIGN=RIGHT to have it appear on the right side of your page with your page text on its left, or else ALIGN=LEFT to have it appear on the left side, with your text to its right. Alternatively enclose the image tag within center tags. HSPACE=20 and VSPACE=20 can also be added to make sure text is not pressed up close to the graphic.

NOTE: All Golden Olive graphics MUST be hyperlinked to this page. Achieve this by inserting the following coding AROUND the image tag:

<A HREF="http://www.birzeit.edu/links/goldeno.html">
 image tag here </A>
