ACADEMIC & RESEARCH

Al Multaqa, The Arab Thought Forum: http://www.multaqa.org - The Arab Thought Forum have changed their URL and updated their site. We see an increase in information and useful information at that! This includes summaries of meetings concerning topics like the "role of opposition parties" which can be ordered in Arabic as well as their newsletter. Hopefully we'll see their journal on-line soon - at the moment just titles and authors that look very interesting. Added to Complete Guide: 18 February 1997. Review updated: 8 April 1999. Top of page.

Applied Research Institute - Jerusalem: http://www.arij.org - The Applied Research Institute - Jerusalem, actually located in Bethlehem, has information on environmental issues in Palestine, including some fine research papers and a collection of interesting maps. You can download environmental profiles of Jenin, Nablus, Ramallah, Jerusalem, Jericho, Hebron and Bethlehem. As a bonus, the website is laid out in an attractive and logical manner with regular updates. Also included are papers on the water conflict from a Palestinian perspective and a Palestinian vision of environmental protection and sustainable development. ARIJ's website really came into its own when the Eye on Palestine section was introduced in early 1997. See this section for excellent primers on understanding Israeli settlement policy, including the infamous Abu Ghnaim/Har Homa project and a host of others in the Jerusalem area. Incredible maps, photos and arial photos facilitate understanding. Recent additions include an assessment of the Environmental Impact of Jewish Industries in the West Bank and material about the expropriation of Jalud lands. An e-mailing list is also available. ARIJ's website was featured twice in the website of the month section of the Complete Guide in 1997, for good reason. Visit to find out why. Review last updated: 2 February 1998. Top of page.

Birzeit University, Institute of Community and Public Health: http://www.birzeit.edu/icph - For over 15 years, well before the arrival of the Palestinian Authority, as with many other centers and departments at Birzeit, the IPCH has been providing a vital service in the absence of government. Its new website offers reports and, eventually, an English/Arabic/French searchable database of Palestinian law. Review last updated: 4 March 1998. Top of page.

Site also provides some background to the school and its founders. Also has information on its research facilities and accommodation for anyone working in Jerusalem. Site last updated in June 1999. Added to Complete Guide: 27 August 1996 / Review last updated: 2 September 1999. Top of page.

Center for Palestine Research and Studies (CPRS): http://www.cprs-palestine.org - -Established in March 1993, "The Center is an independent academic research and policy analysis institution seeking to fully explore and understand new local and regional development and assess their impact on the Palestinians. Because CPRS is independent of political factions, it is in a unique position of being able to serve as a forum for meetings of Palestinian and international researchers from various political backgrounds and ideologies in a free academic and professional atmosphere." Provides information in both English and Arabic. Excellent opinion polls section, dealing with Palestinian views on the peace process, democracy, human rights, as well as plenty of research material on Palestine. Added: 6 January 1997. Review last updated: 2 September 1999. Top of page..

Educational Network: http://www.a-supernet.net/ednet/ - The Educational Network website is an excellent resource for information on education in Palestine, containing articles, interviews, contact addresses for NGOs working in education, and as a reference for material on the handover of education to the Palestinian Authority. Recently they relaunched their website and are putting it to good use. Review last updated: 20 September 1999. Top of page.

Israel/Palestine Center for Research and Information (IPCRI): http://www.ipcri.org/ - IPCRI offers very detailed information about what it is doing in areas of research such as the future of Jerusalem, water, the environment, economics, law, development and the negotiations. However, there is very little information about these issues. As an example of how often the site is updated, it has a list of 'upcoming' conferences, most of which have happened several months ago. Needs much more information and more regular updating. Review last updated: 2 September 1999. Top of page.

Institute For Palestine Studies (IPS): http:// www.ipsjps.org - The Institute For Palestine Studies (IPS), founded in Beirut in 1963, is an independent nonprofit research and publication center, not affiliated with any political organization or government. IPS promotes research, analysis, and documentation on the Arab-Israeli conflict and its peaceful resolution. IPS publishes quarterlies in three languages: Journal of Palestine Studies (English), Majallat al-Dirasat al-Filastiniyah (Arabic), and Revue detudes Palestiniennes (French). Although the focus of each quarterly is on the Arab-Israeli conflict, the three journals offer different articles in keeping with the different interests of their subscribers. The website contains information about how to order the journals and other publications, all of which provide a rich resource for researchers interested in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The downside is that few papers or articles seem to be available for downloading. Added to Complete Guide: 27 August 1996 / Review last updated: 16 December 1997. Top of page.

Jerusalem Quarterly File: http://www.jqf-jerusalem.org Published by the Institute of Jerusalem Studies, "the journal is dedicated to providing scholarly articles on Jerusalem's history and on the dynamics and trends currently shaping the city." Provides subscription information, but several past issues and the current issue are all available on the site with complete text of all the articles. An important and very useful resource. Added to Complete Guide: 2 September 1998 Top of page.

MUWATIN - The Palestinian Insitute for the Study of Democracyhttp://www.muwatin.org Muwatin is an institute based in Ramallah with an impressive and extensive range of publications. Our Voice: http://www.birzeit.edu/ourvoice A site containing research, comment and analysis from Birzeit University staff and students. The idea behind this site is expressed in the name. We are providing a space where the important work of the university can be published, and, at the same time, helping the Birzeit community directly communicate with those of you outside Palestine. After all, that's the whole point of this huh?Added to Complete Guide: 2 November 1998 Top of page.

Palestinian Academic Society for the Study of International Affairs (PASSIA): http://www.passia.org/ "PASSIA seeks to present the Palestinian Question in its national, Arab and international contexts through academic research, dialogue and publication." This it does very well, featuring lists of conferences, seminars, meetings, and projects in which PASSIA is involved and in what manner. Good features on the website include an online photo exhibition of events, figures and Jerusalem; a Jerusalem section with facts, chronology and maps; and a 'Palestine Facts' section. Most of us know PASSIA because they put out a wonderful diary sought after by anyone who spends anytime in this part of the world, but this website shows they do a lot more than just help organize your time. Added to Complete Guide: 13 January 1997. Review last updated: 2 September 1999. Top of page.

Palestinian Centre for Regional Studies: http://www.pal-crs.org/ I was unsure whether it was worth adding this site as every page is empty apart from the logo and an email address. Maybe something will happen one day?Added to Complete Guide: 8 April 1999. Top of page.

Palestinian Energy and Environment Research Center (PEC): http://www.planet.edu/~pec - Has info on PEC management, PEC activities, PEC projects. Site says that it is still under construction, but it also says that it was last updated in August 1997, so you be the judge. Added to Complete Guide: 7 January 1997. Review last updated: 2 September 1999. Top of page.

Palestine Planning Center: http://www.oppc.pna.net/ The Palestine Planning Center was founded in 1967 by the PNC (Palestinian National Council). According to the blurb, "The Planning Center is dedicated to issue studies, surreys, and recommendations about various Political and Economic social frames(sic) that have to be presented to the president." This site has both an English and Arabic version although I could only find one article on the English site. I hope this isn't an indication of what actually is presented to the President!Added to Complete Guide: 2 November 1998 Top of page.

RIWAQ - Centre for Architectural Conservation: http://www.birzeit.edu/riwaq/ - RIWAQ's website has brief information on the centre, a report on the architecture of the old town of Nablus, and a "Virtual Exhibition of Palestinian Tiles". Although the site has not been updated for a year, it is worth a short visit if you haven't been there yet. Review last updated: 16 December 1997. Top of page.

Shaml - The Palestinian Diaspora and Refugee Centre: http://www.shaml.org/ - A good and growing resource for all those interested in the Palestinian Refugee problem, probably the strongest part of this site is the "facts and figures" section, which offers stats about refugees in and out of Palestine. Publications and newsletters also grace the pages of this site, as well as a photo album of refugee related images from four key periods in Palestinian history. Added to Complete Guide: 3 March 1998. Top of page.

RECOMMENDED SITES OUTSIDE PALESTINE

Center for Policy Analysis on Palestine: http://www.palestinecenter.org - Established in 1990 as the educational division of The Jerusalem Fund for Education and Community Development, the Center for Policy Analysis on Palestine provides a much-needed Palestinian and Arab perspective to political, academic, and media establishments dealing with the Middle East. Through its publications and programs, the Center brings into focus the implications of specific U.S. policies on the Palestine question. Their site contains information on their publications, events organized by the Center, internships and results of polls concerning Palestine. They also provide information about the work of the Jerusalem Fund - an independent, non-political, non-partisan, non-sectarian charitable organization which supports the development of grassroots Palestinian initiatives in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Added to Complete Guide: 21 May 1999. Top of page.

MEDEA: http://www.medea.be - European Institute for Research on Mediterranean and Euro-Arab Co-operation. A useful resource which has a searchable index of subjects covering the Middle East. If you can't quite remember the difference between the Algerian FIS and FFS then this is the place to go. A French version is also available. Added to Complete Guide: 2 December 1998. Top of page.

WEBSITES THAT ONCE WERE BUT ARE NO LONGER

Arab Studies Society - Jerusalem: http://www.arabstudies.org/ - The first review of The Arab Studies Society on 17 November 1996 hoped for "..a rich source of material on Palestine if and when it expands." Now it seems the website has disappeared completely and the URL takes you somewhere totally unrelated.Review last updated: 2 September 1999. Also reviewed on 15 December 1997. First added to Complete Guide on 17 November 1996. Top of page.
