OLIVE AWARDS

There were 15 Golden Olive Award winners in 1998, out of a possible total of 113 (Internet service providers and computer companies are excluded from consideration), which represents only 13 percent of Palestinian websites. • Applied Research Institute - Jerusalem - for offer high quality, up-to-date information on the continuing process of Israeli settlement during the peace process.
• Center for Palestine Research and Studies (CPRS) - for continuing to offer up-to-date information on the development of Palestinian public opinion.
• Landscape Perspectives on Palestine and International Conference in November 1998 - for the most interesting and entertaining conference webpage ever seen in Palestine.
• Palestinian Academic Society for the Study of International Affairs (PASSIA) - for an excellent collection of images and other material on Jerusalem.

arts & culture

• Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre - for offerings an excellent introduction to Palestinian culture and current cultural events in Palestine.

business & economy

• No successful websites. Tut, tut, all that money.

government & services

• Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics - for providing such an important, regularly-updated resource.
• Palestinian National Authority Official Website - for constantly striving to improve an already very useful service.
• Population, Housing and Establishments Census 1997 website - for putting up an information-packed website at the same time the issue was prominent in the media.

human rights

• LAW - The Palestinian Society for the Protection of Human Rights and the Environment - for regular updates in such a critical arena of information.

industry & products

• No successful websites. The idea is to sell the product, guys.

internet & computers

• Not considered for golden olive awards as some of our friends are quite big and mean.

news & media

• Al-Ayyam Newspaper (in Arabic) - for an attractive, daily Arabic news service from Palestine.
• Al-Hayat Al-Jadedah (in Arabic) - for an attractive, daily Arabic news service from Palestine.
• Al-Quds Online (in Arabic) - for an attractive, daily Arabic news service from Palestine.
• A Personal Diary of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (in English) - for continuing to offer a well-presented, alternative perspective on the situation here.

online memorials

• No successful websites, although one did get quite close.

organisations & associations

• No successful websites. A lesson in how to make something interesting boring.

personal homepages

• Daoud Kuttab's homepage, journalist - for continuing to produce interesting writing, despite harassment from the government and their creepy pet journalists.

schools & universities

• Birzeit University - for making the effort by building quality, Palestinian resources that people want to read.

tourist information

• No successful websites.
