GRADUATE PROGRAM
MA in Sociology
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers a program leading to the MA degree in sociology (Development, Politics and Social Research). Students may choose between the thesis or non-thesis options.Admission Requirements
1. First degree (equivalent to the BA) from a university recognized by Birzeit University.2. First degree in sociology or anthropology. Holders of degrees in other fields may be admitted in special circumstances but may be required to complete preparatory courses from the BA program in sociology.
3. Applicants are required to sit for an English language proficiency examination
Program Requirements
Students are required to complete 36 credit hours as follows:- Thesis Option
A. Required Courses: Sociology 630, 631, 632, 633, 634, 860 (thesis)
B. Electives: 15 credit hours from the following courses: Sociology 635, 636, 637, 638, 639, 730, 731, 732, 733, 734, 735, 736, 737, 738. Students may take up to two courses from other graduate programs at the university to fulfill the departmental elective requirements upon approval by the Graduate Studies Council in the Department.
- Non-Thesis Option
A. Required Courses: Sociology 630, 631, 632, 633, 634, 830, 831
B. Electives: 15 credit hours from the following courses: Sociology 635, 636, 637, 638, 639, 730, 731, 732, 733, 734, 735, 736, 737, 738. Students may take up to two courses from other graduate programs at the university in fulfillment of the departmental elective requirements upon approval by the Graduate Studies Council in the Department.
Continuation in the Program
Continuation in the Program is contingent upon the following:- fulfilling the requirements for continuation in graduate programs at the University as set out in the Graduate Studies Regulations;
- passing an English language examination by the end of the second semester in the Program (unless exempted from the language requirement upon admission);
- completing within the first year any preparatory courses from the BA program as specified in the admission letter, provided they do not exceed 15 credit hours. Students will not receive credit for the preparatory courses.
Thesis/Non-Thesis Option:
Students are required to submit a request to pursue either option upon the completion of 12 credit hours in the Program. The Graduate Studies Council in the Program will act upon these requests based on students' performance and the Program's ability to provide supervision for those wishing to pursue the thesis option. Students are allowed to switch from one option to the other in accordance with the Graduate Studies Regulations.Courses Offered
