Introduction

The Abu Rayya Rehabilitation Center was established in April 1990 as a result of the efforts of the PFS in Ramallah. The idea for the Center emerged in response to the increase in spinal cord injuries during the Palestinian Intifada. In April 1990 the Center was opened for outpatients only. In November 1990 the first inpatients were admitted.

The Center is located on the Ramallah-Betunia Road, 14 kilometers from Jerusalem. Its building is carefully designed to meet the specialized needs of the disabled - both outpatients and inpatients.

Purpose:

The purpose of the Center is to rehabilitate to whatever extent possible those disabled due to injury or disease. The Center specializes in meeting the unique needs of the paraplegic, tetraplegic, amputee, and those with bone, joint, and nerve damage. Priority is given to spinal cord injured.

As a national rehabilitation center K. Abu Raya A.R.C aims to develop rehabilitation service in the country in co-operation with other rehabilitation centers and progams. In this way the work concepts final goal will aim at improving the standards of life for disabled Palestinian.

Goals and Objectives:

Since opening ARRC for In-Patients in Nov. 1990 and up to Jan. 97, the centre had given its services to the Palestinian community as shown in the following statistics.

1. No. of In-Patients rehabilitated with Spinal Cord Injuries, Spinal diseases limb injuries : 630

2. No. of Patients treated in the out patient's clinic : 5575

3. No. of Out - Patients treated in the Physiotherapy Department : 2388

4. No. of out patients treated in the Occupational Therapy Depatment: 487
