Internet 'sole technological outlet' for Palestinians says Paltel
By Elizabeth Biddlecombe, Total Telecom
On the occasion of the ITU's World Telecommunication Day (May 17th) Paltel, the Palestine Telecommunications Company, has added its own spin to the nominated theme of "The Internet: challenges, opportunities and prospects."
"Despite the prevailing political turmoil, border closures and Israeli blockade of cities throughout Palestine, Paltel [persists in providing Internet access] and the latest advancements in the field of telecommnications for all", says a company statement.
The company cites its recent programme of tariff reductions for local and international calls as well as calling cards, data services, and videoconferences as evidence of this. Noting the fact that the Internet has become a "major means of international interaction" the statement continues by pointing out that these measures, "[leave] the Palestinians this sole technological outlet as the only gateway to interact and communicate their worries, aspirations and hopes to the world and get over the imposed Israeli barriers." The company adopted the new slogan "Tell the World" earlier this month.
Paltel recently added two new operators, Telecom Italia and Az Telecom in Azerbaijan, to those from 104 countries around the world that now route calls direct via the 970 international code, rather than sending traffic via Israel's 972 gateway.
