2000 Goals: Future Projects, Earth Stations, Multi-Services Data Network 7

Sixteen Future Projects Scheduled for 2000

1. Connections of the remaining Palestinian rural areas to telephony services will proceed.
Construction of the International Network, which inter-connects Palestine with the world, to be completed.
Expansion of the National Network infrastructure capacity is to be completed. This is to occur following telephony traffic shifting from Bezeq to the Palestinian network.
The National Network Control Center (switches, transmission network, microwave network) will be put into operation.
The Multi-Service Network which deploys Frame Relay technology in data transmission for serving economic, educational, and medical institutions is scheduled for completion.
The services offered by the Intelligent Network are to be introduced.
The Internet site in Nablus is being equipped to be connected with the backbone connectivity network, for offering Internet services through digital leased circuits.
Offering Integrated Service Digital Network (ISDN).
Initiating a voice mail service to be available throughout all areas.
Offering the international calling card service.
Initiating Toll Free Service.
Earth Stations
To obtain full independence for the Palestinian telecommunications network from Israeli operators, an international tender has been offered for the construction of two earth stations for satellite telecommunications. One is to be operated through the ARABSAT and the other through INTELSAT. Bids have been received and are under way currently. Launch is expected during 2000.

In the meantime, we are proceeding with operating a temporary limited-capacity earth station at Gaza using available telecommunications through the ARABSAT and securing international traffic exchanges with some Arab countries, as we await operation commencements of the main station.

Direct interconnection between Jordan and Egypt through microwave
Negotiations are under way in coordination with the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications to allow direct telephony traffic exchange between Palestine and both Jordan and Egypt. Plans for microwave network construction are ongoing on both fronts. This measure would save huge amounts of money spent for traffic routed through Israel. It paves the way for further direct connections with other Arab countries, Europe, America and Canada through submarine cables.
Multi-Services Data Transmission Network
The purpose of this project is to offer various services in the area of data transmission, Frame Relay, ATM, and ADSL throughout Palestine. It applies to all sites with switch construction completed or under way. Applications for such a project are as wide ranging as:
· High speed internet connection
· Distance learning
· Tele-medicine
· Video on demand
· Electronic games
· Other uses
Network Separation Project
This project is a first in PalTel's priorities. It is considered a prime measure, which would eventually lead to total independence and comprehensive control over the national and international telephony traffic of the Palestinian Telecommunications Sector. Through the profound efforts exerted by the MoPT, PalTel has managed to operate the national transmission backbone by the means of fiber optic cables and digital radio links, leading to comprehensive separation and independence in a short time.
Bethlehem 2000 Project
In accordance with the company's general mission, PalTel is keen on providing high quality telecommunications services for this vital event. In support, it initiated a media center in the heart of the city of Bethlehem which opened on December 24, 1999. The center offers Internet access, telephone services, facsimile, copying and ISDN services to visiting journalists and supporting media agencies. Six smaller, fully-equipped booths were also distributed throughout the city of Bethlehem, offering 24-hour telecommunications services including calling cards, telephone, facsimile, etc.
