Interested in the Middle East?
Join the five-person staff of the Middle East Research
and Information Project (MERIP) publishers of Middle East Report for a
fall, spring or summer internship. Interns become an integral part of
our work, learn about the Middle East, and gain valuable training in editorial
production, administration or promotion. Now in its 26th year of publication,
Middle East Report has provided critical, independent analysis of the
issues and policies shaping the region today.
Editorial Intern Responsibilities
The intern assists the editor in producing Middle East
Report. Depending on skills, this may include light research, proofreading,
inputting copy, making corrections and formatting articles for typesetting.
Interns also assist in procuring photographs and securing reports and
documents. For students interested in learning how to find information
in Washington, DC, and in how a magazine is produced--from start to finish.
Outreach Intern Responsibilities
The intern assists in the development and implementation
of outreach and promotion strategies, targeted towards primary and secondary
school audiences, new subscribers and donors. Work includes developing
plans for promotion of specific issues and the magazine in general, coordinating
mailings and mailing lists, writing and problem solving. This is an excellent
opportunity to learn outreach and promotion skills and provides hands-on
experience in promoting alternative educational materials.
Administrative Intern Responsibilities
The intern assists the executive director, business manager
and circulation manager in implementing business and circulation strategies.
This includes processing orders for back issues from universities and
individuals, maintaining the inventory and library databases, coordinating
a sales presence at seminars and conferences and handling informational
queries. Provides experience in administering the business side of a nonprofit
organization.
General Responsibilities
All interns share in general office work: answering telephones,
photocopying, preparing outgoing mail, running errands and assisting staff
members in special projects. Interns also participate in staff lunches
on Middle East topics and may be asked to attend and/or staff a table
at events.
Minimum Commitment
Fall and Spring interns: one semester, 12 hours per week.
Summer interns: 3 months, 20 hours per week. Internships are unpaid; however,
MERIP does reimburse for daily travel expenses.
