Mayor Sidr in France to discuss upgrading
projects for the benefit of Jericho City
Mayor of Jericho Mr. Abdel-karim Sidr paid a visit to France and met with French tourism Minister and french Culture Minister, they discussed ways of enhancing and implementing shared projects, and they discussed future plans to make those projects become realities on the ground. The three of them talked about relieving the " Peace Tourism Road " which connects Egypt, Jordan, Palestine and Israel and Jericho plays a big roll in this project.
Including to all that, special Cultural and Tourist schedule has been discussed with The French Culture Minister that's to say, training tourists Guides, marketing for Jericho City in all over France, start in a special programs to train hotel owners and workers, to train souvenirs, and to establish a special French/Palestinian Friendship house for youths.
Even though the discussion took on its consideration the Jericho Pubic Library which will be supported by French Government through the special agreement signed with Benny Municipality in France.
A Palestinian worker hits a bird by a stone…. Soldiers accused him of being a Palestinian sniper.

This incident explains the range of the Israeli aggression, and it happened to one of the taxi drivers. As usual this driver drove his passengers from Jericho taking them to Ramallah and since all roads were blocked by the Israeli Army so he had to take a another soil road which connects Jericho with the winding street leads to the settlements where he was caught by an Israeli Patrol, the passengers were ordered to get off the vehicle and were detained for many hours, thus the driver was severely beaten by the soldiers, and was ordered by one of the officers to kiss the ranks which cover his shoulders, the driver refused and randomly was beaten after each request and each refusal. Then he was fined and had to pay 1000 Israeli Shekels. His driving license was confiscated claiming he broke the imposed siege.
The other incident as I can say makes you laugh and cry at the same time and it happened to one of the Palestinian workers who was captured on the same above mentioned road, he was accused of being a stone thrower, the worker denied and said that he is just a poor worker, goes in the morning to his work and comeback home at night, suddenly the soldier picked up a stone and ordered the worker to hit his head, the worker refused, the soldier insisted but the worker who knows if he does it he will be shot down and the worker strongly refused. All of a sudden the soldier ordered him again to throw the stone up in the air to see whether the worker is one of the stone throwers or not, the poor worker picked up the stone and threw it in the air, and right at that minute a poor bird was flying on the same spot got hit by the stone, then the soldier said: see you hit the bird which means you are a trained stone thrower, the worker said: No, it was by chance. The soldier said: you are a stone sniper and you will pay for it, the soldiers started beating him up severely so he couldn't stand on his feet until the arrival of other workers who helped him out after the departure of the soldiers.
I was told this funny story by the worker himself whom couldn't stop laughing while telling me the story saying: did you imagine my bad luck when the bird passed by my stone at the same time so I got all the beatings by the soldiers.
Palestinian uprising (Intifada)
The Palestinian uprising is a public Revolution which includes all the parties of Palestinian society who participate in this uprising against Israeli Occupation to the Arab land for more than 50 years a go and continued until today.
Throughout these long years Palestinians suffered all kinds of oppression, Depression and torture, but the last crime made by Sharon was the reason for the new Uprising..
Actually, Palestinian people wanted peace particularly, when the "Oslo" agreement was signed between Israelis and Palestinians in 1993, during that time Palestinians believed that the Israeli occupation on the Palestinian land will be vanished and removed therefore Palestinians will achieve their dream of establishing their independent state on all Palestinian land which has been occupied since 1967 and Jerusalem.its Capital
On the contrary, since the Oslo agreement Israelis had increased their oppression on Palestinian people. Settlements were increased, Israelis demolished our houses, and also they refused to release Palestinian prisoners.
Nowadays because of this uprising the Israelis soldiers put the Palestinians under siege, also Israelis denied Palestinian workers from entering the Green line and restricted their movement.
Actually, all of these measures made by Israeli Government caused disappointments and depressions among Palestinian people who preferred being dead and to be martyrs than this difficult situation, so the second uprising started it thus will continue until the freedom and liberation, which all the Palestinians aspire.
We hope that this Intifada give us the opportunities to achieve our goals in establishing our independent State.

Jericho Municipality participates in Italian week in Palestine for Peace in the Middle East
On Sep 5-6. 2000 Jericho Municipality participated in the Italian Week in Palestine, the events took place in Palestine on Sep 2. 2000 until Sep 9. 2000, Jericho Municipality gave its effort, solidarity and support to the project which was organized by the Italian Coordination of Local Authorities for Peace and it was planned to support the Peace in the Middle East and Bethlehem 2000. Events in Jericho Municipality took place on Sep 5 and Sep 6. 2000 in which many Italian groups, Musicians, actors and other groups had part in the events.
Jericho Municipality sings a Twinning Agreement with Pisa Municipality of Italy
On Sep 26. 2000 a Delegation from Jericho Municipality headed by the Mayor Mr. Abdel-Karim Sidr visited the Municipality of Pisa in Italy in a official visit to sign a Twinning agreement between the two Municipalities, the signing ceremony took place in the Belliari hall on Sep 28. 2000, the ceremony was attended by many high ranking officials from both Military and Civilian sectors including the Diplomatic bodies in Pisa.
In his speech Mayor of Jericho presented the importance of such agreement in all levels for the sake of the the two peoples, also he expressed his sincere thanks on behalf of the Jericho City Council and the people of Jericho, including to that Mayor of Jericho gave a wide and extensive explanation about the current Political, Economical situations in Jericho. He assured the historical and religious importance of Jericho which is the Lowest and the Oldest City in the World and it was the passageway of Jesus Christ for five times and he resides in it for forty days where he challenged the evil and fasted for forty days. thus Jericho gained its reputation because its the passageway of Jordan River and the Dead Sea.
A peaceful march in Jericho
On Sep 11. 2000 a Peaceful marsh was organized by all Women Organizations and movements in Jericho, the participants raised all Arab Countries Flags as a sign of unity, they were shouting and calling for the Arab Unity, the march took its way to the Red Cross Branch office in Jericho where it was ended at that spot after long speeches.
Police School & College was bombed in Jericho
On Oct 12. 2000 the IDF Warriors and Military Abachi Choppers fired 4 missiles at the Police College in Jericho City, three missiles hit the main buildings of the college and one missed its target, luckely no one was injured since everybody was evacuated after hearing the choppers flying above the buildings, this act by the Israeli Forces was condemned by the Palestinian Authority and its branches all over.
Jericho Municipality has been awarded the Total Quality Management Certificate ISO 9002
From our faith in improvement and continous development of the services that are provided to the residents of Jericho by using modern administrative procedures under the umbrella of the International High Quality the Municipality started to take steps into implementing the idea and working it out. at the beginning of 1999 the idea was formulated and actions took place, in June. 1999 the First official contact was made with the Industrial Details Company " a specialized company in the ISO issues". Many training courses were made to the Departments Heads, officials and workers, they attended lots of sessions, and many paper work was made, new plans and new procedures depending on the rules of Total Quality Management ISO 9002.
On Thursday May 18. 2000 The Final inspection on implementing the rules and instructions of the Total Quality Administrations was made in all Departments and Sections by a specialized Commitee formed from SGS International for the ISO and Total High Quality and then the Commitee recomended that Jericho Municipality should gain the Certificate of the ISO 9002.
Jericho Municipality Signs the contract of Ein Sultan Irrigation Rehabilitation Project
In a special ceremony held at the Municipal Theater on May 23. 2000 and was attended by Dr. Saeb Ereqat the Minister of Local Government, His Excellency Mr. Wu Jiuhong The Chinese Ambassador for Palestine, Mr. Abdel-Karim Sidr Mayor of Jericho, Representatives of the Chinese Company for Water and Electricity, Municipality Staff and many farmers from Jericho and the surrounding areas, during the Ceremony Dr. Ereqat eulogized the efforts and assistance that is given to the Palestinians by the Donor Countries and he cherished the roll of the Belgium Government in financing this essential and important project.
The Chinese Ambassador expressed the position of the Chinese Government in supporting the Palestinian Rights and he re-assured the great and Historical relation between China and Palestine.
Mr. Abdel-Karim Sidr the Mayor of Jericho said that the Project will be implemented in cooperation with IFAD and within two months the Chinese Company for Water and Electricity will start the Project which is expected to be over in ten months. and he added that this project will increase the share of water for every farmer in Jericho thus increasing the products.
UNICEF signs the Agreement of Financing the activities of the Children Municipal Council for the year 2000
On June 1. 2000 Ms. Marelina Vivianni the Special Representative of UNICEF in Palestine signed together with Mr. Abdel-Karim Sidr Mayor of Jericho the agreement of financing the activities of the Children Municipal Council for the year 2000, Mr. Sidr expressed his sincere gratitude for the perfect and marvelous action taken by UNICEF in supporting the idea of the Children Municipal Council which considered the first in Palestine and was transformed into reality.
He added that the budget for the year 2000 reach the amount of $40,000 which will be distributed on several activities and programs made and planned by the Children City Council's Members.
12 year old Ismat Ali Huseini, a member of the Children Municipal Council reviewed the idea from the beginning, the importance of establishing the Children Municipal Council and its positive effect on both children and participants.
