The Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education, in cooperation with Palestinian Universities is organizing the third Conference on Information Technology in Higher Education. The conference will take place on October 12 and 13, 1999 and will be hosted by Birzeit University. The theme of this conference is:
"Raising the IT skill levels of Palestinian University graduates to internationally competitive standards"
The conference will examine curricula, academic programs and learning tools currently being used and looks at what needs to be done to achieve our stated goal.
Every year, hundreds of students with IT related training, graduate from Palestinian Universities and join the local workforce. Unfortunately, the skills of these graduates do not meet international or even the local IT demands. By upgrading the educational system and producing highly skilled IT graduates, Palestinians will be able to build a Palestinian Information Society and develop a viable IT sector.
This discussion group will attempt to achieve the following:
We encourage as many people as possible to join this discussion, and by no means should the discussion be limited to academics. In fact experiences, success stories, needs and requirements of the private sector, are at least equally important.
It is worth mentioning here that by the middle of October (the set date for the conference), the IT Strategy project will be in its final stages. This means that much of the situation analysis of the educational systems and the strategic IT needs would have been identified and analyzed and a set of recommendations made. This information will significantly enrich our workshop.
