In this excellent review of human rights concerns in 1996, Al-Haq presents a summary of the types of violations of international law which have been committed by Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) during 1996 and January 1997. In this summary al-Haq concentrates on new developments during 1996 addressing: right to life and security of person, torture, prisoners, restrictions on travel outside the OPT, education, family reunification, elections, settlement expansion, Jerusalem, and Hebron City.

ACADEMIC FREEDOM FIRST!

On December 23, 1996, the Human Rights Action Project launched the ACADEMIC FREEDOM FIRST—International Campaign for Gaza Students WEBSITE. Get informed and then join efforts to end the ongoing harassment of students from Gaza by the Israeli authorities. The website contains background information about Israeli harassment of Gazan university students studying in the West Bank. The site includes five sections: Why do Gaza students need your help? Understanding the Issue, Portrait and Testimony, Campaign Platform, and the Action Page.

If you already know lots about the struggle of the Gaza students go straight to the Action Page and send off a letter to Mr. Netanhayu or find out how to help organize a petition.

CHECK OUT THE SITE AND GET INVOLVED IN THE CAMPAIGN.
