Faculty of Science: Overview

Established in 1972, the Faculty of Science was amongst the first faculties on the Birzeit Campus. In 1976, the Faculty graduated 25 students, today however, over 950 students are enrolled in its various departments. The Faculty now offers baccalaureate degrees and several Master's degrees within the departments of Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics. To further expand the University's degrees and programs, the Faculty of Science, in coordination with the Faculty of Graduate Studies, aims at developing a graduate degree in computational sciences in the near future.

One of the Faculty's many projects is a glass blowing unit that was established in 1995. The first of its kind in Palestine, the unit is manned with one expert, and is responsible for the production and distribution of lab items to laboratories on the Birzeit campus, in addition to other universities and pharmaceutical companies in Palestine. Besides it being cost efficient, the unit is capable of producing custom made designs upon request for items not found in the market. The unit is based in the Science Building on campus.

The Faculty of Science, together with a number of universities in France, is developing an undergraduate program leading to a B.Sc. in Applied Mathematics to Economics. The French universities are offering financial help, in addition to experts in this field who will assist in launching and developing this program.

The Science Building houses the Faculty of Science, and is equipped with numerous laboratories for physics, chemistry, biology and computer science.
