Faculty of Arts: Overview
The Faculty of Arts was one of the first faculties to be established in 1972 at Birzeit University. Having graduated 43 students with Bachelor's of Arts degrees in 1976, the Faculty is now one of the largest on campus, with over 1600 undergraduate students enrolled in one of the following programs and departments: Department of Arabic Language and Literature; Department of English Language and Literature; Department of Languages and Translation; Department of Sociology and Anthropology; Department of History and Political Science; Department of Geography; Department of Education and Psychology; Department of Media; Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies; Archeology Program; Palestine and Arabic Studies Program (PAS); Fine Arts Program; Music Program; Physical Education Program; and the Women Studies Program.
In 1977, the Faculty introduced the first graduate program at the University, a Master's Degree in Education, which was ultimately put on hold due to the political situation in the country and the various closures imposed on the University, thus hindering the education of hundreds of students.
The degrees offered at the Faculty of Arts enable students to teach in the local schools, work in the different governmental and non-governmental offices and institutions, or continue their graduate degree at either Birzeit University or abroad.
No single building houses the various departments of the Faculty of Arts, and its classes and offices are dispersed amongst several buildings on campus. Yet the Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and several department main offices are situated in the Commerce and Economics Building.
