Exploring Bethlehem

Why should you walk in the historic core of Bethlehem?

As a tourist of today, you will arrive in your bus at Manger Square and walk a more 70 meters into the Church of Nativity. You will neither get an idea of Bethlehem as a town nor a personal impression of its friendly and hospitable people. You will miss the smell, taste and the flavour of the town and you will also miss meeting Palestinian people living their daily lives today in the historic structures of days gone by. 

 

As the tourist in the year 2000 you will start your visit to Bethlehem at one of two main entrance points to the old city. You will find a board at the starting point of each circuit explaining the various routes and sites. A flyer will be given to you showing a map which indicates the circuit, the places of interest, be it historic houses of special architectural interest, old arches, romantic alleyways and staircases and of course some of the numerous churches along the way. You will then find clear and simple signs indicating the name of the circuits such as ‘Harat Beit Lahem – The Quarters of Bethlehem’ or ‘The route of the pilgrims to Shepherds’ Field’. This last circuit for example takes you out of the historic city core of Bethlehem and follows the historic path of the first pilgrims, which walked from the Church of the Nativity to Shepherds’ Fields to worship the place where the star of Bethlehem was first seen.

By walking and hiking in and around the town you will get to know the real Bethlehem and its people – an unforgettable experience.
