Ali was born in 1931 in Saffouria, a village in the Nazareth district razed to the ground in 1948. He now lives in Nazareth. He is self taught and began his poetry career late (in 1983). His poetry is very popular in Palestine and among the Arabs of Israel, and he has published several collections of poetry.
He is also a short story writer.
