Academic Network-PLANET
The Palestinian
Academic Network PLANET at Al-Quds university is a leading Educational
Internet Service Provider in Palestine. Planet links universities, colleges
as well as schools with the World Wide Web. It also links Research Centers
and some non-governmental organizations. Planet links most of the Palestinian
ministries using wireless means of communication such as
microwave devices.
Now planet offers connectivity between cities and within cities through
leased lines provided by PALTEL.
Mission
Planet's mission
is to provide the necessary organizational, technical and academic infrastructure,
whereby Palestinian academicians, scholars and researchers will be able
to have access to international academic resources and references, communicate
with peer scholars, connect local Palestinian universities in a national
communications network.
Main
Equipment
PLANET headquarters in
Samir Amis-Kalandia is functioning as academic ISP. It's connected with
IBM - T1 line through a leased line (frame relay, 128kb/s) with the following
main equipment:
- SUN SPARC 20 workstation
with 2 GB disk capacity running Solaris 2.4 is currently the main server
of PLANET -Donation from the UNESCO.
- SPARC storage
array handles 12 Gigabytes of data - Donation from the UNESCO.
- 3600 Cisco router
with 30 internal modems allowing 30 users to connect (PPP) simultaneously.
- 2511 Cisco router
connected to 16 external modems allowing 16 users to connect (PPP) simultaneously
- Donation from PECDAR. NT server, that creates an inner network with
print services.
- Proxy Server
- Two UPS's that
provide power instantly in case of a power failure.
- 5 low grade PCs
used by PLANET team.
