Leonids Archive

The image left was created by Eric Young, a graphic artist at Washington University at St. Louis. Eric created the image basedon the numerous descriptions of the 1833  meteor storm by various Sioux tribes in the region around North and South Dakota.

The following are some drawings regarding the Leonids of 1833:

The 1833 storm as seen from Niagara Falls, from Smith's Illustrated Astronomy, a schoolbook by Asa Smith, 1864..
 R. M. Devens's work .The 1833 storm as seen from the shores of the Mississippi River. The book  listed the shower as one of the 100 most  memorable events in American history since  the country's founding in 1776.
One of the few early color representations
of the 1833 Leonid storm over North America appeared in Bilderatlas der Sternenwelt, published in 1892 by Edmund Weik, University of Vienna, Austria.

The following are some drawings regarding the Leonids of 1966:

The following are some drawings regarding the Leonids of 1998:

Above: Vic Winter assembled this oposite of the best fisheye photographs he took on the morning of November 17th 1998 from Powell Observatory near Louisburg, Kansas. The brightest of the dozen meteors he recorded was a fireball as bright as the full Moon that lit up the sky. Note the Sickle of Leo, which marks the shower's radiant, rising in the east and Orion on the meridian.

These Leonids were photographed from the  4,000-foot elevation of Pine Mountain near Ojai,  California, on the morning of November 17th. Meteors from two 20-minute exposures were digitally composited with thosecaptured in the 5-minute exposure of the northeastern sky. Polaris is the  bright star at upper left. Above: From his observing site at Monte Romano in Italy, Lorenzo Lovato captured this brilliant fireball behind a thin layer of clouds during the peak  of the 1998 Leonid shower. He used a 16-mm wide-angle lens at f/2.8 for a15-minute exposure on Fuji 800 film.

At St. George, Kansas, this  Leonid flared with the brightness of the full Moon at about 1:45 CST on November 17th. 1998 Click on image for larger view.
