STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTIONS:

part 2 of 4: Election Day...The voting process...
8.00am to 4.30pm - Students queue up at one of two campus polling stations, to get their university ID cards checked by Hasan Dowani from Birzeit's Office of Student Affairs. Only full-time students registered for a BA or BSc. are elligible to vote. For this election, 2,798 students were eligible to vote.
Next, the students have their ID cards checked against a list of full-time registered students, and are given two slips - one for the student council elections, another for the referendum on the new system. A student representative from each of the campus political parties is able to observe the voting process, and later the counting process. The elections were also observed by representatives from the Nablus-based Centre for Palestine Research and Studies.
Cubicles are provided for the students to vote privately. The students then deposit the two slips in separate, locked and sealed boxes, to be counted later.
