part 3 of 4: Election day...The counting process...





Left: Taysir Al-Ukaili and Kamal Hamadan, from the Computer Centre, operate the optical reader (right) that counts the votes. The machine reads one ballot paper per second, finishing the final calculation in a few seconds once all the data from the papers has been entered.


President Hanna Nasir (left, with microphone) and Dr. Nazmi Ju'beh, head of the elections committee, prepare to announce the vote. 3,000 students turned out to hear the result. Of the 51-seat parliament, the number of seats and percentage (rounded off) that each bloc gained was as follows.
