The Media Resources Unit (MRU)


The Media Resources Unit (MRU) is unit of the Media Center at Birzeit University. MRU is a non-profit, community outreach center, available to local journalists. The MRU aims at three-fold: 

To improve the professional skills of working journalists; 
To increase the accuracy and objectivity of print and electronic media reporting; 
To provide a place, where journalists could meet to enhance professional and personal relations.


Services 
  1. Training sessions on writing skills, news coverage, interview techniques, election coverage, computer basics, layout design, Internet, e-mail, photography, and teamwork.
  2. Lectures on relevant issues to the media and Palestinian society by prominent figures, and off-the-record briefings.
  3. Computer room with twelve full-capacity computers, printer, scanner, and free Internet use.
  4. Private meeting room for journalists.
  5. Communications services including phone, fax and photocopier.
  6. A comfortable lounge, which serves as a meeting place in convenient morning and afternoon hours, equipped with satellite television.
  7. Library of educational materials and books relevant to Palestinian media, periodicals, newspapers, and information on media programs offered at Palestinian universities.
  8. Gallery for photojournalists to exhibit their work on a rotating basis.
  9. A WHO-is-WHO on the MRC's homepage of Palestinian journalists, including their affiliations and qualifications.

Future Plans 
  1. Issue a newsletter (via print and E-mail);
  2. Issue a quarterly professional magazine for journalists working in the Arab world;
  3. Annual awards will be given to Arab journalists for outstanding work in their field;
  4. Translation, production of media books and educational material;
  5. Workshops on media issues (i.e. copyright and the protection of intellectual property).
