Institute of Community and Public Health

The Institute is divided into several units:

  • Teaching unit: responsible for all formal degree level post graduate teaching
  • Training unit: responsible for certificate and non-certificate level training
  • Epidemiology unit: responsible for policy and operational research in both classical and social epidemiology.
  • Environmental health unit: responsible for policy and operational research in the area of Environmental health/public health.
  • Management/drugs unit: responsible for policy and operational research in the area of management of health care systems as well as drug delivery systems.
  • Child unit : responsible for policy and operational research in the area of child health.
  • Womens Health unit : focuses on the identification of the main women's health problems and works on identifying the social and not only the biological determinants of their health.
These units are inter-related in that the teaching and training is linked to the research component. That is, teaching and training projects emanate out of the investigation of need. At the same time, the research is enlightened by experience gained in the teaching and training. Clearly, sometimes more than one unit is engaged in a piece of work, for instance, environmental health and epidemiology often meet. But this does not take away the need to separate the different disciplines into units because of the general approach and practicalities of work.

These units are served by the Resource Centre, part of our Administrative Support Unit. This centre contains 7000 titles to date and about 40 scientific and semi scientific journals specialised in the different disciplines of Community and Public Health. In addition, this centre houses CD-Rom drive literature searches, including medline, popline, social science index, socio-file, drug fulltext and others, serving as the backbone for the retrieval of abstracts, and the beginning foundation for all research activities. Finally, this resource centre houses our computer laboratory, used to train both our students and different groups working in health in the Palestinian community.
