The Resource Centre
This Centre offers general resource services in the area of community
and public health to the Department's researchers, to Birzeit
university students, as well as to researchers and students from
outside the university. The Centre's holdings include books and
periodicals, as well as health education materials such as slides,
videos and charts. The Centre also houses a thorough collection
of local publications about the Palestinian health sector. Moreover,
the Centre serves the specific research and training focuses and
needs of the Department.
Recently, the Department computerized the resource centre. Utilizing
the computer program CDS-ISIS, the Department was able to enter
multi-lingual texts--mostly Arabic and English-- into this computer
cataloging and retrieval system. The Department has also recently
developed the infrastructure needed to operate computer-line literature
searches, and, at the moment, Medline, Healthplan, Popline, Social
Science Index and Sociofile are available for use by researchers
and students. Plans are under way to gain the technical and infrastructural
capacity for retrieving original and full texts via Internet for
storage in the Resource Centre and for local use.
