A 16-month
Calendar of Events to celebrate the beginning of a new Millennium
has been planned planned. Through a well-conceived event strategy, the Bethlehem 2000
Project Authority plans to conduct a festive, colorful and inspiring
programme of events to establish Bethlehem as the Star of the
Millennium. The Bethlehem 2000 Calendar is
built around the religious feasts and celebrations of the
Millennium and most events evolve around themes that are relevant to
the Holy Nativity and the life of Jesus. In
addition to several Star events that are meant to generate
international attention
through the media, the Bethlehem 2000 Project aims at creating a
rich cultural life in the city for Palestinians and visitors alike.
The Bethlehem 2000 Project is co-ordinating with the local churches
to ensure that the rich and diverse religious history of
the
District receives due attention.
A series of
concerts, choral music, and masses will be presented through the
Spring and Fall Concert Series. Organised nature walks and popular
traditional village ceremonies will be part of the Bethlehem 2000
Spring and Fall Celebrations. The long and colourful Summer Season
will feature choral music, folklore performances, puppet shows, film
festivals, international youth gatherings, and a conference for
Palestinians in the Diaspora. Public concerts and plays will grace
the streets of Bethlehem. The Regular and Weekly Events Programme
includes the presentation of weekly events to enhance evening
entertainment. Weekly events will include a Nativity Play, folklore
dance, classical oriental music performances, and a sound and light
show. Music and folklore performances will be presented regularly to
the public on Manger Square during the summer months. The Christmas
Season 2000 will also be marked with emphasis on youth and children.
A grand closing ceremony will coincide with Easter 2001. Historic
sites will be utilized as a backdrop to the cultural events. In
addition to the Old City Centres and various community venues, the
events will take place at the Church of the Nativity, the Peace
Centre, the Crusader Hall, and Terra Sancta Theatre Hall. The more
spacious venues are out door and will include Manger Square, the
Solomon's Pools (fortress and pools), and the Shepherds' Field in
the Bethlehem area. Events will also be planned in other Palestinian
cities, cultural centres, churches, and historic open spaces such as
Hisham's Palace in Jericho.
