Introduction

Palestine is celebrating the 2000th  anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. To celebrate the beginning of a new millennium, the Palestinian National Authority is welcoming pilgrims and tourists coming to visit the Holy Land. Bethlehem in particular and other cities and towns in Palestine have prepared a programme of events and celebrations for the Palestinian people and visitors alike. The Palestinian Millennium is being coordinated through a special body set up by the Palestinian National Authority, namely the Bethlehem 2000 Project.

Palestine is the land of Jesus Christ. In addition to a rich biblical history it also gives tourists the opportunity to visit archaeological, historical, and cultural sites that date to the times of the Canaanites, the extensive Arab and Islamic period, as well as to the colonial age. It offers walks and hikes in its extensive valleys, picturesque villages, and coastal areas as well as its desert hills and towns.

From Christmas 1999 until Easter 2001, Palestine in general and Bethlehem in particular is hosting many cultural and artistic events which will include special church services, ecumenical processions, religious celebrations, and organised tours. This Calendar of Events gives you a comprehensive overview of the 17 months of events.

To spend the turn of the millennium in the place where modern time began will be a unique experience for those following the Star of the Millennium
