1. From the Academic Office
    - The University of the Middle East is announcing its second Summer Institute Program in Sustainable Development Strategies, to be held in Boston from June 24 – July 24, 2001. Graduate student (Masters and Ph.D. candidates) and undergraduate students graduating in 2001 are eligible, as well as young professionals in the fields of development and/or environment. Application deadline is February 20, 2001. Additional information and application forms available in the Office of the Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1:45 – 2:30.

    - The Public Affairs Office at the American Consulate is accepting applications for the Fulbright American Studies Summer Institute Program. Participants must be highly proficient in English. Duration of the Program is 6 weeks, and deadline for application is March 1, 2001. Application forms and program descriptions are available in the Office of the Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1:45 – 2:30.

    - The Ministry of Higher Education, through the Director of the Division of Ecological Sciences, is announcing the Man and the Biosphere Program (MAB) Young Scientists Awards for 2002. Application deadline is July 1, 2001. A list of the topics for the 2001 awards is available for your review. 

    - The MBI Trust at SOAS is announcing postgraduate scholarships for Master Degrees at one of the London universities. April 13 is the closing date for applications for the academic year 2001/2002. Additional information is available in the Office of the Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, from 1:45 – 2:30, or in one of the British Council offices.

    - The Mediterranean Program of the European University Institute, Italy, is announcing the Third Annual Mediterranean Summer School from July 9–19, 2001, entitled "Building Interdisciplinarity in the Study of the Middle East". Application deadline is April 29, 2001. Additional information available in the Office of the Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
  2. From the Director of Personnel Management
    My deep gratitude and appreciation to Dr. George Rishmawi, ex-officio member of the Council of Personnel Affairs as he ends his term of office as President of the Union of University Employees. I thank him for his support and contributions to the Council since its creation in September 1999. I also welcome Dr. Adnan Musallam who will be joining the Council in his new capacity as the Union President.

    Union elections took place on Thursday, January 17, at 11:30 a.m. 74 Union members voted out of a total of 105 registered members. Following are the names of the seven-member Executive Committee:

    - Our condolences to the Latin Patriarchate on the death of Monsignor Raouf Najjr, former President of Bethlehem University. Funeral arrangements are pending. 

    - Faculty members interested in updating their publications in the Home Page are asked to provide a diskette copy with their pervious and new material, to Mr. George B. Sahhar, no later than Friday, February 2.
