On December 18, 2000, Bethlehem University became the home for a unique statue of Mother and Child (Lady Mary and Jesus). Carved out of olivewood, the statute is a gift from the Friends of Bethlehem University in Ireland. 

The design, resulting from a contest held in Ireland, was not based on the usual style for Mother and Child statues, and took into consideration the natural flow of the piece of olivewood. 

Members of the Bethlehem University community attended the unveiling ceremony. Brother Vincent Malham, FSC, President - Vice Chancellor, stated that we are fortunate to have the Friends of Bethlehem University in Ireland. He thanked them for their assistance and support. 

Brother Vincent also thanked the Friends of Bethlehem University in Ireland because they made available the expertise of Father Conner Ward and Ms. Collete Dowling, whose assistance has been significant in planning for the University's future. 

Ms. Collete Dowling stated that the olivewood sculpture represents the child Jesus and his mother, yet the sculptor preferred not to reveal the ideas that resulted in this interpretation of the subject. She also welcomed interpretations from the Bethlehem University community. 

After Brother Vincent unveiled the statue, and Father Connor Ward blessed it, participants attended a small reception on this occasion.
