The Road of "Forty Pillars": From Bethlehem University to the
Church of the Nativity in Manger Square
Seventeen artists of six nationalities (from France, Germany, Morocco, Japan,
Italy and England) sculpted blocs of monolithic stone 3 to 3.5 tons each, and
250 cm. high which were extracted from Bethlehem. The pillars have been placed
on an itinerary inside the old town of Bethlehem which starts on the road from
Bethlehem University to the Church of the Nativity. These pillars were presented
at Strasbourg in Place de Chateaux in December 1999. Fourteen pillars were sent
to Bethlehem and three were left in Strasbourg to show the symbolic relationship
between Bethlehem and Strasbourg. Photos below show 3 of the 14 pillars in three
different landmarks dubbed metaphorically as "The Road of Forty
Pillars". For more information, see web site <www.bethlehem-city.org>
