DIPLOMA TOURISM MANAGEMENT
Bethlehem University is participating in a
cooperative educational venture , the Tourism for Peace Program, with
several other institutions of higher education around the Mediterranean
Basin.
This program is under the umbrella of UNESCO's
University of Culture and Tourism for Peace. The participating
institutions are: Bethlehem University (Palestine); Ben
Gurion University (Israel); the Institute International de
Formation au Tourism (Marseille, France); the ecole de
Management (Nice, France); and the Institute des Hautes
studes de Management (Morocco).
The fundamental principal behind Bethlehem
University's Tourism for Peace program is to offer integrated training
courses in the professions of tourism which will give each student the
necessary basic knowledge and skills in: physical layout and
organization; facilitation requirements; and management.
Tourism for Peace Program is a three year
program of studies and internships. For the first two years, the
teaching aspect lasts for six months followed by an internship
period of two to four months. These internships must take place
in tourism related industries outside the country of the student. During
the final year, students will follow courses for four months. Then for
six months they will be required to create, develop and organized a
tourism-related project - such as to design, develop, manage and produce
a musical festival or a folklore festival.
Another project could be the planning and
management of the physical layout of an ecomuseum or the site of a
landmark and the conditions of access to that landmark. Students will be
required to solve all the related issues, including the actual financing
of the project.
What makes this program unique is that all
participating institutions are connected via satellite interactive
video-conferencing. The satellite communications system used in the
Tourism for Peace Program is EUTELSAT with headquarters in Paris,
France. Approximately half the courses are taught through interactive
video-conferencing with each institution being responsible for two or
three courses.

Students and instructors in each institution are
able to see and communicate with each other in real time when the
classes are in session. This method gives the students the opportunity
to see, react to, and communicate with students, professors, and
professionals of other countries.
Each institution is able to have experts and
professionals in the tourism industry "come to" their
institutions (via interactive video-conferencing) as instructors for
their students. The remainder of the courses are taught on campus by
professors of Bethlehem University.
Upon successful completion of the program students
will receive diplomas or degrees from their own institutions as well as
an international degree from the University of Culture and Tourism for
Peace with the endorsement of UNESCO and the WTO (World Tourism
Organization).
