I just wanted to wish everyone, who is a part of the
Ramallah Community, a Joyful and Merry Christmas... in hopes of
making 1999 a prosperous and effective New Year. Every step we
make will be a bit closer to the desired goal...but a person
should never give up in what he/she believes in. I am interested
in helping our Ramallah city and youth grow and hope that, from
all of this controversy, more people become interested as well.
As long as we are open to all opinions and consider every side of
the triangle, we will accomplish something extremely useful and
effective in helping our community back home. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND
HAPPY NEW YEAR GUYS!!!!!

First of all I would like to say hello to everyone in
Michigan. Second I want to commend the Ramallah Federation on
this home page. To me this homepage is the best way to allow us
to keep up with ups going on with our Federation. I also would
like to commend the Federation for the Project Hope program. I
can't think of another porgram to get youth and young adults a
chance to learn and to see how our people, our family and friends
are living back home. This program gives us youth and young
adults a chance to give and to help or homeland {Palestine}.We're
very pleased that we have the opprotunity to contribute with
helping build our homeland back up. I was born an American but I
know what it is to be a Palestinian and I've never been more
proud to be one. Watching everyone work together at convention
time and watching our Ramallah club in Detroit grow so quickly
and seeing everyone trying keep our traditions alive makes me
very proud to be apart of our Ramallah family. I would also like
to WISH EVERYONE A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR AND I
LIKE TO SAY KEEP RAMALLAH AND PALETESTINE ALIVE. TO THE
FEDERATION, YOUR DOING A WONDERFUL JOB AND PLEASE KEEP IT UP. I
WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SAY HELLO TO ALL THE KASHAF AND DETROIT CLUB

I agree with Julie, there is no reason why we can't bring
100 youth to Ramallah for Project Hope this summer. As a father
of four young Ramallah boys, I'm committed to give my children
the opportunity to visit and live freely in their homeland. I've
set up a Ramallah House fund for my family and I put money in it
every month. My dream is to own a piece of my homeland. Everyone
needs a dream if they want a chance to make it happen.

Greetings to all! I just wanted to make a few comments in
response to some of the postings I have read. I would like to
defend Project Hope from the many criticisms it has received. For
those of you who commend and support it, thank you. First,
Project Hope is still in its infantile stages. As a result, it
has no been perfected. Furthermore, the nature of life itself
will prevent the trip from ever being perfect. Second, in
response to the comments about planting a few trees and cleaning
the street: yes, cleaning two or three streets and planting a few
flowers will not erase the pain in Ramallah, but if you think
ahead, it is the GESTURE of doing the act and not the act itself
that count. Those trees may be dead by the time we return next
summer, but that isn't what is important. Third, I admit, the
group spent a huge amount of time touring Palestine. The argument
has been made that we did not spend enough time working. There is
no need for that argument as us participants felt the same.
However, an understanding of the unstable social, political, and
economic system in Ramallah would help you understand that many
factors were out of our control. There are always higher-ups to
answer to. Fourth, to the comment about us working with local
youths. That was and is a priority for last year and the upcoming
trip. Again, understanding the social climate in Ramallah would
support Project Hope's claim. We understood the importance of
bridging ties between our youth and Ramallah youth, but as the
old cliche goes, "you can lead a horse to water but you
cannot make him drink." The Federation is working to have a
joint effort with the Boy Scouts and local youth in Ramallah and
our youth for next year. Have patience and all of these fine
details will be ironed out. Fifth, for those of you that are
fortunate enough to spend time in Ramallah summer after summer,
you should be the first to take the lead in efforts like Project
Hope. You know the locals better than us newcomers did and could
have been leaders in initiating the bridging of ties. I was very
disappointed that those of you that could have helped Project
Hope the most dropped out because you didn't feel it was worth
your time. Please, for whatever reasons, reserve your judgement
until you have participated fully and even then, hold off
judgement of other peoples actions. We are not here to judge. I
don't think that spending an afternoon or two with Project Hope
renders anyone an expert on what went on. To all the Ramallah
youth who have hopes to go, please join Project Hope. We need as
many people as possible. Even if our efforts fail the first,
second, third, or even tenth time, we have to keep going back. We
have to make our presence known and we have to get the locals to
warm up to us and want to help us. Is is then and only then that
we can make a change. If anyone has any suggestions that they
would like heard at the next Federation meeting, please email
them to me and I will make sure they are brought up. This comment
is not intended to offend, I just want to give my point of view
from a Project Hope participant standpoint. All of us agree that
Project Hope was far from perfect, but we owe it ourselves and
our people not to throw this idea away because it is less than
perfect. We cannot give up on Project Hope. Thank you all.

I just wanted to say that this website is a great place for
all of our Ramallah family to express their views and opinions. I
see no need for anyone to criticize another's views, just because
they don't agree. To all of the "Concerned Arabs" that
comment on this web page, all I have to say is...."If you
really believe and support the criticizms you make of others,
then come forth and put your name." What harm is in that??
Anyways....good luck to Cleveland on a successful

dearest brothers and sisters of the ramallah federation

hopefully someday we will have peace in our homeland so that we
all may unite as one people in the face of society and in our

To the concerned arab in san jose, I have been keeping up
with the comments on the afrp web and likewise familiar with the
american federation agenda and projects for their homeland. I
really wonder how concerned you are with our homeland and suspect
you feel glorified and annointed as a self appointed spokesman
for your federation. Of course everyone should have a view point
which he or she can express freely, but to get off and critisize
a fellow sister or brother who obviously does have a warm concern
for her people is in itself an insult to your whole community. At
least she does come out expressing her opinion openly and dosen't
hide behind a wall as you obviously did (concerned arab). Maybe
if you signed your comment, we might be able to respond directly
to you rather than give the appearance of bickering in a
guestbook which should be reserved for positive comments and
opinions regarding Ramallah and its american federation. I think
you are the one who owes Lorie an appology.

It's important to be able to discuss openly the issues and
concerns our Ramallah youth have. While I disagree with the young
lady from California's comments about Project Hope, I do support
her right for free speach. That's what freedom is all about. The
next Federation Board Meeting will be the 2nd week in December. I
encourage the young lady from California to put her thoughts and
recommendations down on paper and e-mail them to me. I would be
happy to bring her thoughts to the Board. Of course, I'll throw
in my own comments, that's the democratic process. Project Hope
must be nurtured and be allowed to bloom.

Any movement towards help, be it a planted tree, or even a

I am actually surprised at your comment "CONCERNED
ARAB FROM SAN JOSE". I go to Ramallah regularly and I am
extremely close with many people. I am only stating what the
people OVER THERE confided and felt comfortable in telling me
their thoughts on this. What people do in their own time is their
own business. I am talking about the Federation as a whole. We
are a big group and can be extremely powerful if we use our
resources wisely. You can say what you want, feel how you feel,
and I can do the same. I think you should be open-minded and
actually consider their feelings, not mine. That's where I am
coming from.
LORIE
<ljaber0716@hotmail.com>
ALAMEDA, CA USA - Sunday, November 08, 1998 at 23:49:18 (PST)
Lorie: I have just read the comment you have posted on the
Federation website and I am sorry to say I was disappointed in
the assumptions you have made. I see that last years project hope
was not up to your standard but that gives you no right to assume
everyone attending has made this "..an excuse for people to
come back and act like they have a claim on their land, when they
sold their heritage to the highest bidder and turned their backs
on the city...". Many people that attended last years FED
trip to Ramallah have Family there and visit regularly. Would it
surprise you that these same people send money on a monthly basis
to family and friends in order for them to have the medicine they
need. I don't see these people complaining that a quarter of the
salary they make in the US goes to help the people of our
country. What contribution have you made to help the people of
Ramallah? All I see is your complaining that you did not think
Project Hope had any meaning. Well for many of us it did have a
meaning. We knew planting a few flowers and trees were not going
to make the whole city of Ramallah a better place. It was a sign
to the people of Ramallah that we will give your our hard work,
we will give you our money, we will give you our love and we will
never forget the place we all call home. I find your lack of
interest insulting to everyone that attended and gave their
hearts to Project Hope. You not only insulted the people who
attended Project Hope but also the people of Ramallah who came up
to us in the streets and thanked us for the little we have done.
I advise you to think of what you will say to these people in
Cleveland in 1999 because I guarantee they will have a lot to say
to you.

As a Palestinian and also as an Arab born in the USA, I am
very concerned by what I see as a continuing series of anti- Arab
and pro-Israeli policies and activities eminating from the
Congress as well as from American representatives in the UN. We
Arabs living in the USA should strongly voice our opinions
regarding the current situation pertaining to Iraq, a courageous
Arab country all alone and surrounded by puppets and traitors of
all sorts. Iraq has been singled out by the UN (or should I say
US/UK) in that no matter what it does, the US and UK
administrations are never satisfied. These criminal and
imperialistic tactics orchestrated by these two must not continue
and would not continue, might I add, if we Arabs were united
together politically and militarily. All Arabs, not just
Palestinians, living in the USA should strongly voice their
opinions to their state representatives and call for an end to
the unjust, criminal embargoes that have been placed on various
areas of the Arab nation including Iraq, Sudan, and Libya. We
Arabs in the USA should be more active in terms of lobbying and
political activism when it comes to Iraq. Most Arabs that I talk
with in school (including Professors) say that the embargo is a
criminal and vicious act undertaken to maintain Arab military
weakness and Israeli military superiority in the area. Basically,
most educated Arabs know that the Arab Nation is split into two
categories: one group consisting of highly talented and educated
people that lack the wealth of natural resources (mostly the
Fertile Crescent area of Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria), while
the other group consists of very wealthy and corrupt states that
lack education as well as the desire to progress and
industrialize. Fortunately, for Iraq, they have the best of both
worlds: good fertile land, great oil wealth, and also a great
academic and educational base. This is the reason why certain
Western countries (and even certain Arab countries) are so
concerned about keeping Iraq contained politically and
militarily. The bottom line is that we Arabs have a lot of
political and economic clout in America and we should use it for
the benefit of the Arab Nation and its people.

Great web site:) I went to Ramallah this summer and I
really enjoyed it there. There were so many different things I
could do there. When I was in America I always had to stay
somewhere my parents could see me, but in Ramallah I was totally
free.I didn't have to be watched and I also had a friend (my
cousin) who went with me so I wasn't lonely.
