A suicide bomb explodes in Jerusalem, fire, mayhem, body parts --
live feed on the ground, camera moving breathlessly. The tone
of the story is panicked, the voice of the journalist is hushed,
the face of the anchor sad, grim, even angry. The day after, the
victims are interviewed in hospital, their tears shown up close
and personal.
The IDF shells Palestinian towns, villages, unleashes a barage
of fire on civilians. What do we see? TAPED Wide shots of
buildings on fire, men scurrying around trying to put fires
out, the faces of Palestinians deformed in anger. The tone
of the story is humdrum, the faces of the anchors bored,
emotionless, even eager to move on to the next story. The day
after, coverage of mass funerals, again wide shots showing
enraged Palestinians, elicting from viewers thus not empathy,
but fear.No long, patient interviews on bed side of victims. Nothing
up close and personal.
