Auschwitz
Revisited: don't commit the sin of silence again

PMWATCH -- March 12, 2002 -- Those who have accused Israel
of imitating the practices of their erstwhile tormentors, the
Nazis, have always been sneered off as polemicists prone to hyperbole
and exaggeration. Below is a report from Serge Schmemann of the
New York Times pointing out that Palestinian "detainees had identity
numbers written on their arms in ink" -- a practice notoriously
evoking the concentration camps of Auschwitz. Since the report,
Haaretz has confirmed the allegation (see Ha'aretz ticker updates
at 11:28 am Tuesday, March 12) and has reported that Chief of
Staff Lt.-Gen. Shaul Mofaz has ordered a stop to this practice.
Is
there a need to say more? Do we need crematories before an outrage
is sounded? No wonder millions of Jews died before the Americans
and the rest of the world spoke up after the Holocaust.
And since then, they have been expiating their sin of silence.
Must history repeat itself?
