1918 Founded as "An-Najah Nablusi School".
1941 Developed to be "An-Najah College".
1963 Upgraded to a two year community college.
1977 Became "An-Najah National Uni-versity. "Two faculties were
established: Science and Arts.
Joined the Association of Arab Universities as a full member.
1978 Economics & Administrative Sciences faculty established.
1981 Joined the International Union of Universities.
1982 Construction of Auditoriums, library,and student center complex
started.
1983 Constructions stopped by military order.
1985 New Departments established:
Agricultural Sciences, Fine Arts, Medical Technology.
In the same year graduate studies (M.A) in Chemistry, Islamic Studies
and Education started.
1986 Permission given to continue the construction of the
Administration building.
1988 Campus is declared (by Israeli Authorities) a closed military area.
1991 Reopened by military order.
1992 July 14-17, the University under military siege by Israeli soldiers.
1993 Agricultural Sciences, Fine Arts, and Islamic Studies developed to
Faculty
of Agriculture, Faculty of Fine Arts,and Faculty of Shari'a
(Islamic Law)
1994 New faculty and centers established:
Faculty of Pharmacy, Academic Program for the Study of Involuntary
Migration, Water and Environmental Studies Center, Center for Studies
Consultation & Technical Services, Public Administration
Center.

Civil Engineering.Scientific Research And Graduate Studies
In addition to training graduate studies,the Deanship publishes
An-Najah Journal of Research in both Natural Sciences and Humanities.
Documentation, Manuscript & Publication Center:
The Center was established in 1982. It is concerned with
preserving
the culture and heritage of the Palestinian nation.The Center also publishes
seminar proceedings, academic studies, and old Arabic manuscripts.
Rural Research Center
The Center was established in 1981 to act as a link between the
University and the local community. The Center concentrates on:
* Assessing the economics and technical facilities of
developmental projects.
* Analyzing various agricultural problems and suggesting solutions.
* Collecting statistical data related to agriculture and the
economy and
making them available to students and researchers.
Academic Programme For The Study Of Involuntary Migration:
Established in 1994, the program has three main objectives: research
activities, teaching courses on forced migration and collecting documents.
The introduction of a multi-disciplinary research program on
Involuntary
Migration is an opportunity to stimulate the overall intellectuaL growth
of the students.
Water And Environmental Studies Center:
The main aim of the Center is providing communal services in the
field of water and environment and in the following forms:
* Interactive programs to determine utilities needs (urban and rural),
reviewing their master plans and projects, training their staff, and
helping them in monitoring water and environmental quality
within their
service area.
* Conducting special studies concerning water and environmental issues
affecting peoples health and welfare as the extent of lead pollution
in humans, the effect of raw waste water irrigation on water, soil,
and plants, the role of religion in water and
environmental,protection
and conservation, and others.
* Design and conduct a public awareness programs concerning water and
environmental issues and elements (resources, activities, and
their
impacts and effects on the community) to get peoples support,
cooperation, and participation in communal projects and plans.
COMPUTER CENTER
Established in 1992, the center intends to copmutarize all University
administrative departments through all stages: System analysis and design,
Programming and testing, training staff for system implementation,
computer
assistance for University researchers. As well as helping community
through
computerized services for institutions and through continuous educational
courses.
Center Studies, Consultancies, & Technical Services
The center aims at accomplishing the University goals in serving the
Arab Society and the Palestinian society in particular. This will be
achieved
through the following services.
* Offering studies, consultancy and technical services for
Institutions
in the public and private sectors inside and outside Palestine.
It
will supervise the organization of these services and their
management.
It will also follow-up the implementation of these services in
return for charges.
* Developing the University potentials and abilities in offering these
services, as well as providing moral and material incentives for
University employees and encouraging them to contribute to Arab and
palestinian Societies' development plans.
* Sponsoring and holding seminars,conferences, symposia and training
courses with the aim of developing expertise, abilities, scientific
& professional skills of participants to enable them to contribute
at a time the palestinian society is passing through a
construction stage.
Public Administration Institute:
Established in 1994, the Institute aims at implementing the following:
* Fostering the concepts of modern administration principles to
transfer it to different Palestinians institutions.
* Upgrading and improving performance of government and private
sector.
* Organizing symposia and conferences in different areas of
administration areas such as finance, marketing and production.
* Making assessment needs to develop different training courses
for
different administration level in all institutions.
* Conducting research and studies in different administration areas
for the purpose of developing on the job performance for local
institutions Employees Union
An-elected body representing employees and staff members, the
Employees
Union defends the legal rights and interests of all employees; it works to
raise their academic levels; it also provides other services: health
insurance,
a nursery and a kindergarten for the employees' children.
Students Activities: Student Union
Elected annually, it represents and serves the cultural and social
needs of the student body. They have cooperation agreements with other
student
unions abroad. An-Najah students participate in local and national events.
They engage in voluntarily activities for their university and for the
community as well.
Scholarships:
Financial aid, partial or total, is offered to needy and
meritorious
students. Special cases, including family problems or long periods of
political
imprisonment, also receive appropriate preferential treatment. Scholarships
may include tuition waivers, financial help, or pocket allowances.
Community Service
Every student must carry out at least 32 credit hours of voluntary
work in service to the university or the Palestinian community in the
Occupied Territories.
Library
An-Najah University Library houses 130,000 volumes. 80,000 in English
and 50,000 in Arabic. It subscribes to 150 periodicals in
both languages. It offers research guidance, reference assistance, and inter-
library loans.
Acceptance is competitive and is based on merit with provisions made for special hardship cases. Students with high scores in the "Tawjihi", or the "General Secondary Exam" may apply. The Admissions Office screens the applications and notifies students with acceptable scores to register for the following semester.
The University has a campus of 30 dunums. The University buildings
are
as follows: Faculties' Buildings, The Library, The University
Administration,
The Student Center (under construction), The Auditoriums (under
construction),
& New Library Building (under construction)
Future Campus:
The University also has 120 dunums which will be stated for 120
dunums,
to provide Engineering and Science Faculties. To date no construction has
begun due to the refusal of the Israeli authorities to issue a building
permit, (submitted 1980). On April 22, 1985, the Israeli Military
Authorities
declared the land a military zone, and confiscated it for military purposes.
