General Information

The Islamic University - Gaza (IUG) is Located in Gaza city, close to the seashore and to the UNRWA Headquarter in Gaza, Thalathine (30) Street. It was established in 1978. It's main goal is To serve the urgent education needs of about one million people living in Gaza Strip.

University Status and Government

Council of Founders:
In 1978, the council of Founders began its work. It consists of distinguished people, from inside and outside Palestine. It is responsible for the provision of support, finance, supervision and recruiting qualified professors and lecturers; the approval of policy and regulations; and forming of the Board of Trustees . Board of Trustees:
It consists of a number of outstanding people representing the educational, economic and community service fields in Gaza Strip. The Board of Trustees and the Council of Founders constitute the legislative body for the IUG. As its members live in Gaza Strip, the Board of Trustees work as an executive body for the Council of Founders. Status of IUG

Legal Status
* IUG is an active member of the Palestinian Council for Higher Deucation in Jerusalem which is headed by the Minister of Education .
* IUG is a member of the Arabic, Islamic Universities Unions and the International Association of Universities.
* IUG has twinship agreements with many foreign universities and is planning to have more links.

Academic System:

Faculties
Upon the completion of 140 credit hours, with the exception of the faculty of engineering which requires the completion of 177 credit hours, the IUG awards Bachelor degrees in Engineering, Nursing, Science, Arts, Education, Business, Islamic law and Foundations of Religion. Academic Standards - The curricula of IUG Complies with the internationally known standards.
- IUG follows the credit hour system . The academic year consists of two sixteen- week semesters plus - sometimes - a summer eight-week semester.

Faculty And Students

Staff:
The total number of the academic staff, presently, is 192 persons; 83 Ph.D's, 69 M. As./M.Sc. and 40 persons hold bachelor degrees.
Adminstrative Staff : 130 employees.
Service Workers : 72 employees.
In 1995, 26 persons have scholarships and are on leave, they persue their higher education towards M.Sc. & Ph.D.
Students:
In the first semester 1996, student enrollment is 5137 students, ( 3302 male students - 1835 female students ).
Besides 197 Post-Graduates students (104 male students-93 female students) . Students at IUG are treated equally and objectively. They are graded according to their intelligence and academic performance.
Graduates:
Up to 1995, 3538 graduates.( 2270 male graduates - 1268 female graduates) Many of them obtained higher degrees from American or British Universties, where most of the IUG staff were graduated.

Activities, Buildings and Limitations:

Buildings:
Most buildings of the university are temporary halls. They are mostly insufficient and/or unfit. This is due to the shortage of funds.
Activities:
Serving the community of the Gaza Strip by launching many programs to fulfill the need of the local community and enhance its progress. This is carried out through establishing the following centres;

Future Plans:

The Islamic university has a master plan, its execution costs around $15 Millions, your contribution in rebuilding this higher educational institution for Palestinians is highly appreciated, the best investment is in promoting educational facilities !!!
