17 April 2000

In the name of God, the Merciful, the Mercy-giving

Statement by Khaled Mishaal Hamas political bureau chief
to the Palestinian people and the Arab and Muslim Ummah
on the occasion of the Palestinian prisoner’s day- 17 April

To the Mujahid Palestinian people :

More than two thousands of your faithful sons are still in the Zionist enemy’s jails suffering from the worst kind of torture, repression, humiliation and isolation under very difficult circumstances that violate the human dignity and simplest human rights.

They are the best of men, the pioneers who sacrificed themselves for the sake of Allah and devoted their soul and blood for the sake of your freedom and pride. They have sacrificed themselves in defence of Al-Quds (Jerusalem) and the holy blessed land aspiring for the ultimate goal of liberation and building a bright future for us all.

Today is the Palestinian prisoners’ day ... the day of solidarity with them, backing them and activating with their cause with all forms and means until they attain their freedom and force the enemy to halt its inhuman practices against them and set them free.

It is the least duty we should perform towards them, for they have a much greater right … for they are the blessed Intifada makers, heroes of the Jihad and martyrdom operations and protectors of the sanctities in Al-Quds, Khalil (Hebron), Nablus and Gaza in addition to all cities, villages and refugee camps in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. They are the ones who drew, with their sacrifices and daringness, the picture of the country and features of the Mujahid people, and hoisted up high the name of our people and cause all over the world.

The most precious things owned by peoples and countries are the human being, land and sanctities. Countries, which respect themselves, and living peoples, are those who preserve the human being’s life and dignity as well as defending their lands, doctrines and holy shrines offering in the process the most precious sacrifices. It is not correct at all, especially in our Palestinian matter, to surrender our Palestinian human being’s right, freedom and dignity or to fall short towards our principles and sanctities or preoccupy ourselves away from liberating our lands from occupation for the sake of alternate partial gains and decorative rituals.

The prisoner’s day is an opportunity to pursue a serious policy in support of our heroic prisoners behind bars, back their rights and stand by their families. We should amend the present situation and re-arrange our priorities to be topped by liberating prisoners and lands and stick to our right to Al-Quds not accepting any alternative to it. We should also stick to our religion, values, principles, and national prerogatives and insist on the refugees’ right to return to their homeland.

The prisoner’s day urges us to back the detainees in both the enemy jails and those of the Palestinian Authority, which should immediately release all Mujhadeen and detainees if it was serious in reviving that day. It is an outright contradiction to call on the enemy to release Palestinian detainees while your jails are crowded with renowned cadres, Mujahideen and freedom fighters.!! We furthermore warn you against deceiving our prisoners and people by asking for the release of some of them in return for relinquishing great portion of our people’s rights in their lands and pride through your meager negotiations with our enemy.

To all our free people

Your brothers the detainees have started a continuous program of struggle and steadfastness in various forms in defence of their dignity and rights demanding their freedom. They have voiced warm appeals asking you to move for their sake. You already responded in various cities, villages and refugee camps so go ahead with your efforts and double them, for the freedom of those detainees and their just demands is not their cause alone but the cause of us all. We are a live Muslim people who can never forget their prisoners, because in short they are the symbols of Jihad, heroism, dignity and pride.

To sons of our Arab and Muslim Ummah

The captives of Palestine in the enemy prisons are asking you for support and appeal to you to save them from Zionist claws. So do not let them down, you owe them the rights of fraternity, Jihad, joint destiny and joint battle.

The prophet, peace be upon him, said, “the believer to the believer is like a building that groups together.” He also said, “a Muslim is the brother to (other) Muslim, he does not oppress him nor give up him” and in another narration “Does not let him down”

The U.S.A. and other Western countries back their citizens and followers and seek to rescue their prisoners and detainees even if they were agents and spies or even criminals. The Zionist entity defends all Jews in the world even if they committed crimes against the country they live in and carry its nationality. Here they are now mobilizing the whole world for the sake of the 13 Jews accused of spying in Iran, so why do we belittle our own sons? Why should we be less than other nations? Our Ummah that was known for supporting the weak and the oppressed, regardless of his religion and sent an army for the sake of a woman who called on Mo’tassem in Amoriya to save her, should rather be the spearhead in saving its sons the Mujahideen in Palestine who defend Al-Quds and its surroundings, those who resist the Zionist enemy that targets the whole Ummah and poses a serious danger against it.

As for you our heroic prisoners and detainees

Your people will not let you down and your Movement (Hamas) and all living forces in Palestine and the whole of the Ummah will never let you down and will not forget you until you win your freedom and re-unite with your sons and families God willing.

The pages of glory, heroism and dignity against the Zionist Jews, which each and every Palestinian, Arab and Muslim are proud of, you and the devoted martyrs have made with your blood and sacrifices. Thanks to Allah then to you and to those who march along your path, before or after you, and those who fell as martyrs or those who still wait and never change their position.

Mercy and immortality for our faithful martyrs
Freedom and glory to our heroic detainees
Pride and dignity to our steadfast Mujahideen
Allahu Akbar and victory for the Mujahideen
