"Ali Ahmad Shebani, a land mine victim who fears he may lose his sight, has filed a lawsuit against "Israel" in a Lebanese court and is preparing another for the International Court of Justice at the Hague."
"The 43-year-old severely damaged the retinas of both eyes in January 1995, when a mine exploded as he was returning home to Sojod, a village in the central sector of the occupation zone."
I was riding my mule through the mountains and valleys to avoid "Israeli" checkpoints. A land mine exploded beneath the mule, killing the animal and wounding my eyes. I couldnt see anything as I rolled down the mountain, Shebani told The Daily Star.
"He was informed later that he had been found by residents of Arab Salim and taken to the nearest hospital."
My aim now is not only to receive financial compensation but to make the world see what Israel is doing to innocent civilians in Lebanon, Shebani said.
"He displayed a series of medical reports, one of which was signed by optometrist Dr Hassan Ali Hassan that states the damage to his nerves means that his vision is five per cent of what it should be. His sight will become worse with time, the report read.
"The operation needed to rectify the problem, which only has a limited chance of success, is too expensive for Shebani to afford. I cannot pay any more. Its already cost me LL15m.
Ive filed a complaint to the UN asking for compensation because I want to make "Israel" pay for what its done, he added.
"Shebani, who is unemployed and has four children, urged other victims of "Israeli" incursions to join him in filing lawsuits against its government."
I think this is the first time a Lebanese civilian has tried to sue
"Israel" through Beiruts UN office, he said, adding that he had
filed a similar complaint to the Lebanese foreign ministry on August 25."
I hope that officials, particularly foreign minister Fares Boueiz,
give the issue the priority it deserves, he added.
