Aggressions

  May Tuesday 4 -1999:

"Israeli" occupation bars funeral procession into south Lebanon…(1)
""Israel's" militia on Sunday turned back the funeral procession of an elderly woman who wished to be buried in her hometown inside the occupied zone".

"The militiamen manning a check point on the edge of the15-km (nine mile) deep zone occupied by the "Israeli" entity told relatives of Safiya Fouani, 90, they would be shot if they tried to advance towards the town, Houla".

"The funeral will not enter (the occupied zone) even if it included UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, the Lebanese state and army, the media and the whole world, the militiamen told the mourners".

"The 300 marchers, most originally from Houla but driven out by the 21 years of "Israeli" occupation, staged a sit-in near the checkpoint. MPs Nazih Mansour (of the Faithfulness to the Resistance bloc) and Hassan Alawieh took part in the two-hour protest".

"Israel" is a criminal enemy that does not care for humanity. This sit-in affirms that we cling to each grain of sand in our land, Mansour said.

When the mourners were sure the funeral will not be allowed to enter Houla, they decided to bury the deceased in neighboring liberated Shaqra.

"During the burial the "Israeli" occupation forces and their collaborators in al-Dair outpost fired shots at the mourners in a bid to intimidate them".

"Fouani is the second woman from Houla to be refused burial since the beginning of the year.

Alleged spies arrested by army intelligence…(1)
Two Lebanese men accused of cooperating with "Israel" were arrested by army intelligence, security sources said Tuesday.

"Souheil Barakat and Faisal Aridi are accused of forming an espionage and sabotage ring that coordinated with Unit 504, the foreign branch of "Israel's" military intelligence.

“They gathered information on movements of the army, the resistance and various political personalities in Lebanon,” one source said without providing further details.

Both men are residents of Baysour in Aley. They were arrested after their alleged activities were uncovered by army intelligence.

"Sources disclosed that prior to their arrest the two men were allegedly plotting to assassinate Raja Ward, a former South Lebanon Army* militiaman who turned himself in to authorities in July last year.

Acting on information given by Ward, authorities were able to crack a spy ring and arrest 77 agents accused of collaborating with "Israel"".

Monthly report on "Israeli" aggressions in April 1999…(2)
"There were 127 "Israeli" air and ground aggressions in the month of April. Aerial aggressions constituted 33.7%, of the gross aggressions, in comparison with the 25.4% air aggressions constituted in March 1999.

"Arnoun was once again a victim of "Israeli" brutality. The electoral considerations in the "Israeli" entity has moved the military machine into the town which was annexed to the occupied zone amidst international indifference and blatant US bias covered by feeble pretexts.

However, the Resistance men have proven the enemy claims wrong, repeatedly striking the occupation’s outpost in Beaufort Castle and its road and wounding "Israeli" troops.

"Meanwhile, the Shibaa residents’ uprising went on amidst "Israeli" suppressive measures against the steadfast people.

""Israeli" warplanes carried out 29 raids on areas in the south and the western Beqaa targeting Wadi Zillaya and a Wadi between Jibal al-Bottom and Zibqeen twice on April 4; the woods of Jarjoua, Ain Boudoir, Mlita Hilltop, and Wadis between Jibal al-Bottom and Chaitieh twice on April 10; a Wadi between Jibal al-Bottom, Zibqeen and Yater on April 11 and 12; the area just before Zibqeen and al-Chaitieh on April 15; an area between Jibal al-Bottom and Zibqeen, and an area between al-Chaitieh and Zibqeen on April 17 and 18; the Chaitieh hilltops on April 23; the Mlita Hilltops, Mazraat Oqmata, woods of Jibaa, Western Hilltops of Toumat Niha, woods of Zibqeen, Baton Hilltop, and a wadi between Jibal al-Bottom and al-Chaitieh on April 23; the Mlita Hilltop, Mount al-Rafih, Ain Boudoir, Birket Jabbour Hilltops, northern Zibqeen, and a Wadi between al-Chaitieh and Jibal al-Bottom on April 27; and the Loweizeh Hilltops on April 28.

"The town of Habboush narrowly escaped a horrible massacre on April 4, when the "Israeli" enemy bombarded the town’s residential neighborhoods wounding eight civilians including six children.

"The victims were Fatima Ali Halwani, 2, Zeinab Khdeir, 8, Fatima Qassem Ayoub, 7, Alaa Qassem Ayoub, 6, Mostafa Habib Hjeij, 5, Khadija Ibrahim al-Homsi, 9, Latifa Shreif, 52, and Moussa Atriss, 27.

"The brutal aggression coincided with a similar bombardment that targeted the southern neighborhood in Arab Salim wounding eight-year-old Ali Khalil Hassan.

"On April 17, Abu Dhabi Television’s correspondent Qassim Dergham was hit in the back by an "Israeli" rubber bullet as reporters were taking pictures of occupied Arnoun residents.

"Furthermore, "Israeli" enemy on April 18 bombarded the southern neighborhood of Arab Salim wounding Jawad Mohammed Mosusa, 35.

"Three civilians were also wounded on April 23 when the occupation targeted the town of Kfar Tibet.

Regarding the "Israeli" suppressive practices inside the occupied zone, occupation forces on April 6 collectively expelled 18 people from the town of Shibaa, some of them are elderly, children, and women.

"The mass expulsion ignited an uprising in the occupied town led by its imam, Sheikh Ismail Dallah who called for “confronting this new campaign that aims at displacing the town’s residents”.

Dallah’s ensuing detention by the occupation’s proxy militia outraged the residents who gathered in front of the militia’s security HQ and tried to storm it.

The residents clashed with the militiamen manning the office using sticks and stones while collaborators used rifle butts. The residents were eventually able to free the Sheikh.

"The Shibaa deportees are: Khalil Ahmed Nabaa, 67, his wife Zobeida Mohsneh, 65, Hanaa Hareth Shehab, 35, her sons Maher Nabaa, 9, and Abdallah Nabaa, 6, and Ihsan Mohammed Nabaa, 16, Khalil Saab, 60, Radi Khalil Abu Hwaili, 67, his wife Fatima Abu Hwaili, 68, Waed Khalil Abu Hwaili, 7, Walaa Khalil Abu Hwaili, 35, Ayan Nasser, 25, Hourieh Hamdan, 50, Khadija Saeb, 55, Adib Rahal, 55, his wife Hanaa Abu Rizq, 45, and Bassam Rahal, 14.

"Moreover, occupation forces on April 12 expelled three children from Shibaa. They joined their parents who had been deported earlier.

""Israeli" occupation forces on April summoned for investigation three residents of Ibl al-Saqi which has been sealed off for six weeks.

"Three Lahd militia officers from al-Qlaia’ were also detained along with an "Israeli" officer following the theft of the Marjeyoun barracks office of former "Israeli" liaison unit commander Erez Gerstein who had been killed by the Islamic Resistance Mujahedeen.

"Some money, confidential documents belonging to the liaison unit, and the Lahd militia along with occupation military plans were stolen.

"The occupation which delayed unveiling the theft, feared that the stolen confidential documents may fall in the hands of Hizbullah. Therefore, the "Israelis" changed positions of "Israeli" and Lahd officers on April 3.

"On April 22, occupation detained Abdallah Mohammed Obeid Seif, 56, and his son Hassan Abdallah Seif, 25, following the occupation’s storming into the occupied town of Um al-Toot, a farm between the towns of Marwaheen and Yareen (western sector).

"Occupation also stormed into the town of al-Qlaia’ on April 21 following the mysterious killing of collaborator Gilbert Jabbour.

"On April 25, the enemy detained Jamil Ali Yassin from the town of Dibbeen. Mohammed Yassin (Dibeen) and Gharib Gharib (al-Khiam) were also arrested on April 30.

"On the other hand, occupation forces imposed nocturnal curfew in the town of Shibaa threatening that those who come out of their houses at night would be shot at without prior warning.

"The "Israeli" curfew came after the successful mass escape of militiamen which was the first of its kind as it included, besides the militiamen, their families.

"The desertion of George Rahal, Khalil Abu Hawili, and his wife Nadia Saab, on April 4, besides Ahmed Khalil Nabha and Fadi Khalil Nabha on April 8 (The Nabhas are borthers of the militia’s security official Mohammed who had recently fled the occupied zone) strongly shocked the "Israeli" and Lahdi security systems.

"On the other hand, "Israeli" war minister Moshe Arens on April 14 toured the occupied zone in a bid to boost the flagging morale of his forces and their collaborators.

Arens held a series of meetings with his officers and those of the Lahd militia command.

"On April 15, an "Israeli" military delegation of the northern command and the liaison unit toured the new outpost in Arnoun and
the Beaufort Castle outpost.

"The delegation supervised the new military measures adopted at this front which was equipped with sophisticated surveillance devices.

"Occupation created roads and broadened others in Marjeyoun, Bint Jbeil and Jezzine. "Israeli" forces cut trees for fear of bombs planted by the Islamic Resistance.

"The enemy also closed the Zimraya crossing on April 9 preventing Metropolitan Elias Kfouri from getting to Marjeyoun to head a mass.

"It also closed the Roum crossing on April 10 following the discovery of 4 roadside bombs. The Bater crossing was also closed on April 24.

"These aggressions resulted in wounding 16 civilians (including the Abu Dhabi Television’s correspondent), detaining 23 residents (including 3 Lahdi militiamen), expelling 22 civilians, and damaging 16 houses, four cars and the school in Arab Salim".

"ISRAEL" LAUNCHES DEEPEST ATTACK INSIDE LEBANON SINCE 1980S…(1)

"Tuesday night "Israel" launched its deepest attack since the 1980s on a populated area. "Israeli" warjets raided the center of Baalbeck in eastern Lebanon. Four people were injured and five homes were damaged."

" "Israeli" fighter jets attacked a building near the Imam Ali mosque in the center of the eastern city of Baalbeck last night. It was the first so far deep attack into a populated Lebanese city by "Israel" since the 1980s. Sources said "Israeli" warjets fired two rockets at a cultural center and destroyed it. "Israel" claimed the building was a Hizbullah headquarters. Senior Hizbullah officials categorically denied the "Israeli" allegations that the building belonged to the party and that those injured were Hizbullah members. They stressed, it was a cultural center belonging to an adjacent mosque. Civilians were rushed to the city hospital following the attack. Relatives packed the emergency room entrance. Fatmeh Amhaz was one of the four civilians injured in the raid, which "Israel" claimed targeted Hizbullah officials. Her injuries are moderate. But her son, Ali, is suffering from head wounds.

His situation is stable. Ali said he was having dinner with his mother when they heard loud explosions. They felt the injuries right away. Ali added the shells landed about 200 meters away from the family's dining room. Hussein Jammal was also injured in the "Israeli" raid. The young man said he was passing by when the shells landed not far from him. Hussein is also suffering from head injuries. Hizbullah's cultural officer in Baalbeck, Sheikh Hatem Abu Daya confirmed, the casualties were civilians. He also denounced the "Israeli" raids, saying they violate the 1996 truce understanding which bans attacks on civilian targets. He accused "Israeli" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of ordering the attack on the heart of city to boost the morale of his troops and gain support from "Israelis". He warned that the resistance will strike where it is painful for "Israel" at the appropriate time and place. The raid on Baalbeck shattered glass in several buildings and cut electricity in the neighborhood. Five homes were damaged. The "Israeli" air force last bombed Baalbeck in February".

"Minutes after the raid on Baalbeck, "Israeli" helicopters fired at least eight missiles on valleys near the village of Zibqeen, east of the southern port city of Tyre. Seven homes were damaged and one civilian was injured. The area is outside the zone "Israel" occupies. Hizbullah said resistance fighters retaliated by attacking a number of occupation outposts in the area. "Israeli" occupation troops have been reeling from heavy military losses at the hands of the Lebanese resistance. The commander of "Israel's" allied militia in occupied Jezzine, Monah Touma was killed in a resistance roadside bombing yesterday. Three "Israeli" soldiers were also injured during an overnight clash with Hizbullah early yesterday."

For its part, the Islamic Resistance (IR) reported, in its statement, the following "Israeli" aggressions on the liberated areas of South Lebanon and Western Beqaa:

00:05, the perimeters of Jibal El-Botom and Zibqeen villages came under three 155mm missiles.
00:10, three 155mm missiles hit south of Jibal El-Botom.
00:15, several 155mm missiles struck Mount Safi.
00:25, the perimeters of Jibaa town exposed to more than five 155mm missiles.

15:55, Litani River watercourse between the villages of Qilia and Yohmor was bombarded by thirty five 155mm missiles.
16:30, four 155mm missiles landed Mazraat Hamra…(2)
22:10, the "Israeli" warplanes staged a sortie on Mlita area.
23:05, Qaissieh Valley was shelled by six 155mm missiles.
23:10, nine 155mm missiles were unleashed at Litani River watercourse.
23:20, west of Yater village exposed to four 155mm missiles.
23:25, eight 155mm missiles slammed into the outskirts of Khorbet Selem…(2)

PM Hoss condemns "Israel's" latest April Accord violations…(3)

"Prime Minister Salim Hoss Wednesday denounced an "Israeli" air raid on a civilian area of Baalback this week.

“This is yet another criminal act by "Israel" against Lebanon and its people,” he told reporters. “I believe that this escalation outside the occupation zone is related to the "Israeli" elections.” The "Israeli" polls are due May 17.

"Late Tuesday, "Israeli" warplanes struck deep into Lebanon, bombarding a building adjacent to a mosque in Baalback. Security sources said two civilians were wounded in the attack. "The government filed two complaints to the monitoring group in the south, one over the strike on Baalback and another on an "Israeli" attack that damaged houses and wounded a civilian in Zibqeen the same day.

"The committee was already in session to look into four Lebanese and three "Israeli" complaints about alleged violations of the April Understanding during the last 10 days. The meeting was still going on after midnight.

"Lebanon lodged a complaint regarding the wounding of a woman and her child in the "Israeli" shelling on Jarjoua April 27 and also protested the targeting of civilian houses in the shelling on the same day of Haddatha, Nabatieh and Jarjoua, which resulted in destruction of at least three houses.

"Israeli" complaints accused Hizbullah of launching attacks from civilian areas, like Haddatha and Majdal Selem.
"The "Israeli" delegation to the committee also accused Hizbullah of damaging a house in the district of Jezzine during one of its attacks last week".

Hizbullah source: We are examining our options of retaliation…(4)

"Hizbullah condemned "Israel's" attacks Tuesday and sent a veiled warning to "Israel". “We consider this attack and yesterday’s attack on the Imam Ali's library and a house in the village of Zibqeen a rampant violation,” a Hizbullah statement said.

“We’re studying our options and deciding the appropriate method to deal with this aggression,” it added.

"ISRAELI" ALLIED MILITIAMEN STORM VILLAGE AND STOP COMMUTERS OUTSIDE OCCUPIED VILLAGE…(3)

"Israeli" allied militiamen today (yesterday) installed a checkpoint outside the newly occupied village of Arnoun. They stopped cars and pedestrians travelling to neighboring Yohmor, which is outside the zone "Israel" occupies in the south. "Israeli" allied militiamen also stormed homes in Arnoun. They questioned residents and conducted searches. Most villagers fled Arnoun when occupation troops annexed the village last month to the zone "Israel" occupies in the south. Meanwhile, allied militiamen set a store on fire in occupied Jezzine. The store's owner Maroun Harfoush reportedly refused to abide by a strike ordered by militiamen following the recent killing of their commander in occupied Jezzine, Monah Toumah, at the hands of the resistance".

INTERNATIONAL MONITORS CONDEMN “ISRAELI” ATTACKS ON CIVILIANS…(1)
“ The five-nation group monitoring a 1996 truce understanding in south Lebanon blamed “Israel” for breaching the truce deal by launching air and artillery attacks on civilian areas. Delegates called on “Israel” to abide by the cease-fire and to avoid a repeat performance of its attacks on civilians”.

“In a statement issued late last night, the international group monitoring the April cease-fire understanding, condemned “Israel’s” air raids on the southern village of Zibqeen and the northern town of Baalbak this week, which injured at least two Lebanese civilians and damaged several homes. The raids also led to the destruction of a cultural center in Baalbak. The monitors also denounced “Israeli” artillery attacks which damaged homes in villages near zone “Israel” occupies in southern Lebanon. But the representatives disagreed on charging Lebanese resistance fighters with violating the accord for allegedly firing at “Israeli” occupation soldiers from populated villages, as “Israel” claimed. The April Understanding cease-fire agreement bans attacks on or from civilian areas but does not condemn resistance operations against “Israeli” occupation troops. The group, which is made up of delegates from the US, France, “Israel”, Syria, and Lebanon, said the “Israeli” attacks were a breach of the April Understanding, and put civilians at risk. Delegates also urged “Israel” to avoid a repeat performance and to implement the deal carefully. The monitoring group was set up to oversee the April Understanding accord reached between “Israel” and Lebanon after “Israel’s” April 1996 Aggression Grapes of Wrath Operation three years ago”.

Residential areas shelled by "Israeli" artillery as AUMG met…(1)
""Israeli" occupation forces have once again breached the April Understanding targeting residential neighborhoods in the town of Baraasheit in the mid sector, just hours before the April Understanding Monitoring Group (AUMG) was scheduled to meet to look into Lebanese complaints concerning "Israeli" aggressions against civilians in liberated areas".

"The "Israeli" artillery emplacements in Mohaibib and Baraasheit at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday bombarded residential areas in Baraasheit with 120mm and 81mm rounds, damaging several houses.

The houses belonged to Mohammed Rashed Hinawee, Khalil Shehab, Ahmed Khalil Shehab and Ali Khalil Shehab".

"The eastern part of al-Jmaijmeh and the vicinity of Aita al-Jabal and Mount Zaatar were similarly bombarded, while the vicinity of Tibnin, Aita al-Jabal and nearby wadis were targeted by enemy machine guns".

""Israeli" artillery emplacements overlooking the Iqleem al-Toffah Hilltops this morning shelled the woods in Sojod, al-Rihan and Mazraat Oqmata".

""Israeli" warplanes swooped low over southern area, staging mock air raids, while "Israeli" gunships opened fire on the sea-front between Ras al-Ain and al-Mansouri".

"In the meantime, AUMG convened at the UNIFIL's Headquarters in Naqoura to discuss four complaints, two Lebanese over the damage of houses in Qlaileh following an "Israeli" air raid last week, and damaging a house in Arab Salim by "Israeli" shelling that targeted residential areas in the town".

"ISRAELI" GUNBOATS FIRE AT LEBANESE FISHERMEN AND DETAIN TWO…(1)
""Israeli" gunboats today (yesterday) shot at Lebanese fishermen off the coast of the southern city of Tyre". "Occupation forces detained two fishermen, Hussein Ameiss and Toufic Touflah as they attempted to escape the heavy machine gunfire. Two civilians martyred in Majdal Selem in new “Israeli” breach of understanding…(1)
“A few hours following the end of the April Understanding Monitoring Group's (AUMG) meeting in Naqoura and in a new breach of the Understanding, “Israeli” occupation forces proceeded with their aggressions on liberated areas as scores of missiles and artillery rounds fell on residential areas in south Lebanon, killing two civilians in Majdal Selem, injuring some others and damaging a number of houses”.

“Two “Israeli” warplanes at 10:30 a.m. today (yesterday) struck the al-Aqaba area in the vicinity of Majdal Selem, dropping several air-to-ground missiles.

“Five minutes later a similar raid was staged on the same area, killing two civilians, injuring others and completely destroying the house of Ali Abdul-Latif Yassin in addition to shattering windows of tens of houses”.

“The injured civilians were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The two air raids were accompanied by indiscriminate shelling that targeted the vicinities of Majdal Selem, al-Sawaneh, Khorbet Selem, Jmaijmeh and Wadi al-Qaissieh as warplanes staged mock air raids and enemy drones hovered over the targeted areas.

“Security sources said more than forty heavy artillery rounds fell on the above mentioned towns accompanied by heavy machineguns' raking.

“Israeli” warplanes renewed their aggressions this afternoon (yesterday), staging three raids. The first targeted the “Hanin meadow between the areas of Jezzine and al-Shouff; the second and the third struck the Bisri Bridge.

“On the other hand, reports from the occupied zone said the “Israeli” liaison unit's command in the zone is once again using the surveillance balloon over its headquarters in the Marjeyoun barracks.

“The balloon covers the surroundings of the barracks up to a three kilometer diameter.

“The reports added that “Israeli” bulldozers completed broadening the road from Marjeyoun to Hasbaya after 45 days of incessant work.

“Bulldozers swept away rocks, barricades, and trees where bombs could be hidden. The broadening process caused great damage to nearby olive groves and roads besides orchard walls.

“The liaison command took these measures following the killing of Maj Gen Erez Gerestein by an IR roadside bomb on the same road some three months ago.

“On the other hand, the “Israeli” occupation created new buildings and fortified cement ramparts at the Zaghleh Hilltop outpost, the “Israeli”-collaborators HQ of the Hasbaya front, next to the house of “Information Minister Anwar al-Khalil which is occupied by the “Israeli” enemy forces.

“Israeli” bulldozers have been working at the spot for three days”.

For its part, the IR released a statement in which it mentioned the following “Israeli” aggressions on the Lebanese liberated areas:
00:15, Qaissieh Valley was shelled by seven 155mm missiles.
1:00, the new and old Houla positions exposed to a volley of 12.7mm heavy machine gun rounds.
1:15, two 155mm missiles hit Mazraat Hamra.
3:15, the new and old positions of Houla subjected to 12.7mm heavy machine gun fire.
Between 8:30 and 9:15, the perimeters of Mlikh village came under thirteen 120mm shells and five 155mm missiles.
10:30, the “Israeli” warplanes raided into the eastern perimeters of Majdal Selem town.
10:35, the “Israeli” warplanes reiterated raiding into Majdal Selem destroying the home of Youssef Abdel-latif Yassine. The sortie resulted, also, in killing the two civilians Hassan Mohammad Trabolsi and Abbas Ali Zein.
10:45, the peripheries of Majdal Selem came under ten 155mm missiles causing damages to the houses of Samir Sabra, Mohammad Chokair, Ali Kheireddine and Hassan Ala-eddine.
10:55, Qaissieh Valley was targeted by more than four 155mm missiles.
11:10, four 155mm missiles fell on west of Yater.

16:10, the “Israeli” jets raided twice into the area between Bissri and Mazraat Zahr...(2)

Hizbullah: the crime is “Israeli” attempt to create rift…(3)
“Hizbullah official in the south Sheikh Nabil Qawooq said, "The enemy's crimes against civilians will not go unpunished."

“The crime of targeting civilians in Jezzine is an “Israeli” blatant attempt to create rift in the ranks of the one people that upholds one cause," Qawooq said.

“Israel” wants to divert attention from the quagmire of the enemy and its collaborators, especially in the Jezzine enclave, he noted, adding, "the crime reveals how much the enemy is heedless of our people."

“However, the Hizbullah official continued, this crime will not hinder the resistance men's drive; on the contrary, it will be another incentive to harm this enemy and make it pay for its crimes.

Qawooq called on "our wise people in Jezzine and the occupied zone to be even more aware in order to foil the enemy's plots".

One more "Israeli" air raid one more homeless family…(1)
"Sitting beside what was left of his house, Ali Yassin’s expression was one of bewilderment.

“I’m sorry I can’t offer you anything,” he apologized. "His house on the eastern edge of Majdal Selem was struck by one of two 250-kilogram bombs dropped by an "Israeli" F-16 fighter-bomber Thursday. One bomb reportedly exploded 500 meters away, but the second projectile flattened the two-story structure".

"Two members of the Believers of the Resistance, an off-shoot of the Amal movement, were killed in the explosions. A third man was wounded.

"Yassin surveyed his home, now a pile of crushed concrete with crazily twisted steel-reinforcing rods pointing skyward. “My family and I were lucky not to have been killed,” he said.

"Yassin said that most of his family had been working in a tobacco field at his grandfather’s house a few hundred meters away at the time of the raid.

"He himself left the house a few seconds before the bombs struck. He was planning to renew his passport and had taken photocopies of identification documents to show the authorities. “The originals were all destroyed in the house. Now I can’t officially prove who I am,” he said, shrugging his shoulders."

"His house was one of a cluster of buildings at the end of a track leading to Wadi Slouqi, on the edge of the occupation zone. The wall of at least one other house was peppered by shrapnel. "Shortly before the raid, "Israeli" artillery began shelling just north of Majdal Selem, security sources said. "The residents scoffed at the suggestion that Mohammed Traboulsi and Abbas Zein, the two men killed in the raid, were active guerrilla fighters".

“They were working in a field below the house,” said Yassin. “When they heard some shelling and the warplanes they ran up to the house to get some cover.”

"The government is expected to file a complaint with the five-nation Monitoring Group not over the deaths of the two men, but over the raid having taken place in a populated area".

"But for Yassin, the rights and wrongs of the conflict were overshadowed by more immediate concerns: “All I’m thinking of now is to find shelter for my family. Then I’ll begin thinking about rebuilding,” he said.

"He plans to stay with his parents, who are renting a nearby house after their own was destroyed by the "Israelis" in the April 1996 onslaught".

  May Tuesday 18 -1999:

Southern residents indifferent to polls as air raids continue…(1)
"The sixth "Israeli" general election to occur since south Lebanon was occupied was greeted Monday with complete indifference by the residents of front line villages."

"As the "Israeli" electorate voted to decide the bitterly contested election, Monday was just another day of shelling and air raids for the villagers living opposite the western sector.

“One pig leaves and another comes in,” said Fatmeh Mohanna, 30, in the village of Jibal El-Botom. “Who’s going to win? I don’t know and I don’t care.”

Fatmeh was sitting in the shade with her niece, 1-year-old Rayan, and her mother, Zeina, watching an air raid on the edge of the village.

“We thought it would be quiet with all of them voting in their election. We weren’t expecting raids today,” Fatmeh said.

"One of two "Israeli" F-16 fighter-bombers dived toward the outskirts of the village, with anti-missile flares bobbing in its wake, before banking steeply to the right and climbing rapidly having released its deadly cargo".

"A moment later came a deep, resonant thump, that was felt rather than heard, as the bomb struck Wadi Awar, a few hundred meters to the north. A pall of white smoke rose gracefully into the blue sky before disintegrating in the breeze, as the warplanes circled around for another run.

"There was no resistance activity in the area prior to the raids but the warplanes returned six times to drop a total of eight bombs into the wadi.

“We’re all used to this, from babies to old men,” Fatmeh said nonchalantly as she bounced Rayan on her knee.

"In March, Labor Party leader Ehud Barak who was poised Monday to oust incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to withdraw troops from Lebanon by June 2000 if elected premier".

"But the pledge by "Israel's" former chief of staff meant little to the residents of Jbal Botom.

“They are not honest about pulling out. If they were, they would have done it already,” said a young man, who identified himself only as Mohammed.

"In Aita El-Jabal, 10 kilometers further east, the residents were clearing up debris after several buildings were struck by shrapnel during an "Israeli" bombardment of the area, hours earlier.

Two shells hit the center of the village, damaging the walls of houses, a mosque and a school.

"The shelling was an ill omen for Mustafa Zahar, 70, a shopkeeper. “Every time one "Israeli" prime minister leaves, we get someone worse,” he said.

"Zahar believed that the "Israelis" do not genuinely want to leave Lebanon but would have little choice in the face of mounting troop losses at the hands of the resistance".

"Aita El-Jabal lies in a gently sloping valley on the edge of the occupation zone between the South Lebanon Army* outposts at Haddatha and Beit Yahoun".

"Hussein Saad, 24, gained a grandstand view of Hizbullah’s assault on the Beit Yahoun compound last Saturday, when the position was over-run and a militiaman and an armored personnel carrier were captured"

“I was pleased and proud to see Hizbullah attack the post like that as it sends a message to the "Israelis" that we are winning,” he said.

1- The Daily Star, 18-5-1999.
  May Wednesday 19 -1999:

"Israeli" occupation massacred two young men at Zawtar Sharqieh:
"With 13 minutes left before the polling booths closed in "Israel" Monday, an "Israeli" F-16 fighter-bomber flew high over the occupation zone’s central sector". "In the village of Zawtar Sharqieh, 10 kilometers further north, Farid Harb, 20, and his cousin Saddam, 19, were chatting beside a tobacco field. They had less than a minute to live".

"Finnish Unifil soldiers near the village of Qsair, 2 kilometers south, glanced up as they heard the approaching jet. The F-16 dived toward the ground, passed over the Finnish position and launched a missile 2,200 meters from the Harbs.

"The missile took only 11 seconds to cross the Litani River gorge, skim the olive plantations on the edge of the village and home in for its final run. “The two boys were standing beneath a streetlight,” said Hassan Fawaz who saw the missile’s approach. “The missile flew in a straight line I could see the tail flame in the darkness. Then it plunged to the ground and exploded.”
"The missile struck a concrete wall beside the Harb cousins.

“I thought there would be more shelling so I stayed inside for five minutes,” said Dalal Rammal. “Then I heard Farid’s mother screaming that her son was dead.”

"Hizbullah’s reply was swift. Exactly three hours later, a ferocious barrage was unleashed on northern "Israel", combining Katyusha rockets, artillery shells and mortar rounds. In all, some 140 rounds were fired, with 30 landing inside "Israel".

"Questions were raised Tuesday about why such an apparently motiveless attack had occurred. The Harb family is widely respected in the south. Sheikh Ragheb Harb was assassinated in 1984, a year after founding the resistance.

"A security source said the "Israelis" “took a monumental risk” by targeting the Harbs.

“The "Israelis" must have known that by killing the two cousins at their homes, especially because they were Harbs, Katyushas were bound to hit "Israel" quicker than usual. But for some reason they clearly thought the risk was worthwhile,” the source said.

"The missile fired bore a similarity to the long-range NT Dandy or “Long Spike” anti-tank weapon, developed by "Israel's" state-owned Rafael armaments firm and known to have been test-fired in the south for more than a year. The missile fragments scattered across the tobacco field in Zawtar Sharqieh consisted of the same lightweight metal alloys as had been found in Arab Salim and Majdal Selem following earlier Dandy attacks.

"The Dandy, however, is designed for use by helicopters rather than fixed-wing aircraft.

"According to a military source, the pinpoint accuracy of the missile suggests that the Harb cousins were “painted” by a laser designator, either by "Israeli" troops, possibly in the Salaah outpost opposite the village, or more probably a pilotless reconnaissance drone.

"The Finnish peacekeepers reported the presence of a drone above the central sector shortly after the attack".

"Meanwhile, two civilians were reportedly wounded when "Israeli" troops in Arnoun opened fire on them Tuesday night".

"Red Cross officials were negotiating with the "Israelis" for permission to enter the area and evacuate brothers Hassan and Hussein Mohammed Ollaik".

- "The Monitoring Group convened Tuesday to hear the largest number of complaints since its inception in 1996. It heard a total of 24 complaints"…(1)

Walkout mars Monitoring Group talks…(1)
“Speculation of progress on a withdrawal from the south contrasted Thursday with the first-ever walkout by the “Israeli” delegation to the five-nation Monitoring Group after talks collapsed on the third day of a meeting in Naqoura to discuss a record 26 complaints”.

“In a move that has reportedly angered the U.S. and French co-chairs of the group, the “Israeli” delegation stormed out of the meeting, claiming that Lebanon was refusing to accept responsibility for the deaths of Jezzine civilians from a roadside bomb attack”.

“A statement from the Foreign Ministry said that ““Israel”” had failed to provide evidence that Lebanon was responsible for the bomb blast”.

“The co-chairs released a statement, saying that the meeting was “temporarily adjourned because of the need of the “Israeli” delegation to consult with its authorities.”

GUN-TOTING "BLOND" WHO IS "Israel's" NEW LEADER: A VICTIM...(1)

" Munem Abul Muna nearly fell out of his chair. He had just found out that the blond woman who tried to kill him and his family 26 years ago was in fact a man and not just any man -- but the new prime minister of "Israel", Ehud Barak. "I am in a state of shock and still cannot believe it," said Abul Muna, 60. But whether he believes it or not it, the fact is that he was a collateral casualty; the chance victim of an "Israeli" commando raid in Beirut, on the night of April 9-10, 1973, and the raid was headed by the young Barak, disguised as a woman in a blond wig. "I can still feel the shrapnel from the bullets. But until now I did not know that it was Barak who tried to kill me and my family," said Abul Muna, proudly displaying the small black marks on his right shoulder. Abul Muna, of course, was not the "Israelis"' target. Barak and his men were after three top leaders of the Palestine Liberation Organization. It was just bad luck that Abul Muna happened to be sleeping in a small ground floor room with his wife and two small children in one of the buildings struck by the "Israelis". "I jumped up in terror and looked through the window, and what I thought was a blond woman opened up into the room with a machinegun," he said. "I dived under the bed with my son while my wife covered our daughter with her body on the other bed," he added. Umm Fadi, his wife, interrupted him to add that more than 40 bullets were later recovered in the room while the elevator on the other side of the wall was completely destroyed. The operation, dubbed the "hippy" raid by the western media because of the disguise of the commandos, was one of Barak's most sensational operations in a string of military feats. The glowing reputation he built up in the army has stood him in such good stead in his political life that it helped to propel him last Monday to the prime minister's seat. For the Palestinians, who had established their power base in Lebanon after being forced out of Jordan as a result of the bloody Black September incidents in 1970, Barak's operation was a serious blow. His squad burst into three apartments in the fashionable Verdun neighborhood, shooting dead three key Palestinian officials, Mohammad Youssef Najjar, the number two man in Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, Kamal Adwan, the director of Fatah underground activities in "Israel" and the occupied territories, and chief PLO spokesman Kamal Nasser. The operation also seriously destabilized Lebanon, as then Prime Minister Saeb Salam resigned few days later in protest over the Lebanese army's failure to prevent the attack. It all began that night when a large "Israeli" commando landed stealthily at a sandy beach in Beirut, jumped into rented cars parked nearby by agents who had arrived in Lebanon a few days earlier and sped off into the city where they struck seven different targets, killing a total of 25 people. The other casualties in the Verdun operation included Najjar's wife who was mown down after trying to cover her husband with her body, two Lebanese policemen, a guard and a 70-year Italian woman. "It was a merciless killing operation, a professional James Bond-style operation with explosives, machine guns and all," Abul Muna recalled. It is true that the raid occurred 26 years ago and might have been overshadowed by other horrific scenes during the long years of the civil war in Lebanon that broke out two years later, but it is striking how vivid memories of the incident still remain in Verdun for those who were there. "It was very symbolic. It was a great defeat for the Palestinians, the Lebanese and the Arabs. No wonder Barak later became prime minister," said a barber across the street. But Abul Muna is not very impressed with Barak's achievements. "If one day Barak makes peace with us as he promised when he was elected and if he then comes to Beirut, I will surely take my revenge," he said, sliding his finger meaningfully across his throat".

SIX PEOPLE DETAINED WHILE COMMUTING NEAR OCCUPIED ARNOUN…(1)
" "Israeli" allied militiamen today (yesterday) set up a checkpoint outside the village of Arnoun. They detained six civilians commuting to nearby villages. Arnoun was occupied in April by "Israel" and its local allies in the south. Militiamen have been setting up checkpoints in areas outside the occupied village, questioning and detaining passersby".

Lemon farm workers narrowly escape with their lives after unprovoked "Israeli" ‘flechette’ shellfire…(2)
"For Mohammed Banjak, an employee of the Litani Water Company, clearing the irrigation ditches in the fruit orchards of south Lebanon is a tedious but routine task".

"But the chore was anything but routine Saturday when Banjak and his colleague, Naji Rida, barely escaped with their lives when they were shelled by an "Israeli" tank".

"Banjak and Rida, who owns a lemon orchard on the outskirts of Mansouri, 13 kilometers south of Tyre, were working by flashlight Saturday night to clear the concrete irrigation channels of debris.

“It was hard work, the water flow is sluggish around Mansouri and the ditches need clearing every 10 days,” said Banjak.

"At around midnight, without warning, both men suddenly found themselves under fire from an "Israeli" Merkava tank.

“The tank was targeting us directly. We could see the flash from the gun and then the shells were exploding around us on the ground and in the air. I shouted to Naji ‘get down’,” Banjak recalled.

"The Merkava was hidden behind an earth embankment tucked into the hillside beneath the village of Bayada, some 2,000 meters away.

"The foliage of the lemon trees provided scant protection from the 120mm rounds, some of them filled with vicious 3.5 centimeter-long steel darts.

"Both Banjak and Rida were hit by darts from the first shell. Rida was struck again by the second and third rounds. Six shells were fired in all.

“Naji could hardly move and I could only hobble,” said Banjak.

"Rida was able to call for help on his cellular phone. But the two men had to stagger along a track for 500 meters before reaching the main road. There a friend was waiting and took them to the Tyre’s Najm hospital.

"Banjak had been struck by one dart in the ankle which caused injuries to a nerve in his foot, according to his physician, Mohammed Abboud.

Holding up some X-rays, Abboud pointed to two white marks that stood out against the shadows of Rida’s skull.

"Darts hit Rida’s head in two places, his left arm and left leg.

“These weapons are designed for maximum injury. They are banned weapons and should not be used,” Abboud said.

"They can be fired loose from a tank barrel, like a shotgun, for a range of about 500 meters. The shells that sought out Banjak and Rida in the orchard were packed with 12,000 darts each and timed to explode in the air over the two men.

"The raw earth redoubt hiding the Merkava tank looked disconcertingly harmless beneath the scorching morning sun Monday. But the evidence of Saturday night’s violence lay in the shattered branch of a lemon tree, the small, blackened crater from an exploding shell and the numerous darts and shrapnel fragments lying scattered beneath the shade of the orchard" .

"There had been no resistance activity in the area prior to the tank shelling, so why had Banjak and Rida come under fire from the "Israelis"?"

“Because they are cowards,” said Banjak. “The "Israelis" see a shadow and they shoot. But it won’t stop the farmers from working their land. They might kill us but there are always more of us to replace them.”
