New "Israeli" PM expected to reinstate April pact
(1)
"Ehud Barak, "Israel's" premier-elect, is expected to reinstate the
April Understanding on taking office next week, thus overruling a decision
by the outgoing government to ignore the provisions of the three-year-old
agreement, a senior Labor party official said Wednesday".
"Former Premier Shimon Peres described the decision by outgoing "Israeli" Defense (War) Minister Moshe Arens to boycott the Monitoring Group meetings and ignore the provisions of the understanding as extreme and nonsensical.
In their last week in office when they have no authority, when they lost the election they throw a wrench in the works, Peres told "Israel" Radio.
Peres said that Barak, who was chief of staff when the understanding was signed in 1996, would almost certainly reverse the decision as soon as he takes office. Barak is close to reaching a deal which will enable him to form his coalition government before the July 8 deadline.
A Labor Party spokesman said that Barak would make a decision on the April Understanding only after he had formed his government.
" The unilateral abandonment of the agreement angered several senior "Israeli" Army officers, who described the decision to boycott sessions of the Monitoring Group as a scandal.
"The officers said on "Israel" Radio that the committee is the only forum where "Israeli", Syrian and Lebanese officers sit together on a regular basis along with U.S. and French representatives.
"The officers, who have always held the committee in high regard, described as unacceptable that "Israel" could lodge 11 complaints with the group and then refuse to attend the session.
"The public dissension of the "Israeli" officers typified the often acrimonious relationship between the military establishment and the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"During Netanyahus three years in office, individuals in the "Israeli" Army repeatedly criticized government policy, including the continued occupation of south Lebanon".
"Israeli" warplanes broke sound barrier over Beirut
(2)
""Israeli" warplanes at 10:30 this morning (Wednesday) swooped law
over Beirut, breaking the sound barrier, while MK drones hovered over the
Beqaa and the South".
"In front line villages the "Israeli" occupation's machine gun fire and artillery rounds kept on falling in the vicinities.
"In the meantime, Tyre fishermen tried to sail out, taking advantage of the relative calmness in the area, but "Israeli" gunboats intercepted them by machine gun fire and forced them to return to the Tyre port.
"The enemy, two weeks ago, imposed a curfew in Tyre, forbidding fishermen to sail far from the port".
However, the "Israeli" occupation forces staged the following aggressions on the Lebanese liberated area as reported in a statement issued by the Islamic Resistance (IR) (4):
2:30, the surroundings of the new Houla position subjected to a barrage
of 12.7mm heavy machine gun bullets.
Between 4:30 and 4:45, Mount Zaatar was bombarded by eight 155mm missiles.
12:45, one 155mm missile fell on Zaatar ravine and one another on Aita
El-Jabal valley.
Between 13:40 and 14:15, Mount Sojod was shelled by fourteen 155mm
missiles and five tank rounds.
Between 15:30 and 15:45, eight 120mm shells struck Sojod village.
15:49, Mount Al-Rafih was targeted by eight 120mm shells.
Between 17:00 and 17:30, the perimeters of Habboush town came under
twelve 81mm rounds and three 155mm missiles.
21:10, the peripheries of Loweizeh village exposed to four 155mm missiles
and a volley of 12.7mm heavy machine gun rounds. At the same time, the
surroundings of Beit Yahoun outpost subjected to 12.7mm heavy machine gun
fire.
New arrests in occupied zone
(3)
"Lebanese security sources said the "Israeli" occupied forces yesterday
(Tuesday) arrested Kfar Kila resident Hussien Awada, Abbas Hassan al-Rashidi,
50, from Markaba and Ibrahim Bahjat al- Basha, 22, from al- Khiam and imprisoned
them at the Khiam prison".
"Mr Awada is very ill and undergoing a steady treatment, the sources stated, adding there is no reason for these arrests other than racketeering, after their relatives refused to pay tributes for the collaborators.
"It is likely that the collaborators have informed against the three detainees to the "Israeli" occupation forces and told them they are members of the Resistance or cooperating with it".
Child wounded in "Israeli" crackdown near Arnoun
"A young girl was wounded Friday when a mortar shell fired from Beaufort
Castle exploded beside her in Yohmor as "Israeli" troops imposed a clampdown
on the village, denying access to all traffic by machine-gunning the approach
road.
"Zeinab Hamzi, 7, was struck by shrapnel in the stomach in the early evening and was admitted to hospital in Nabatieh. As she was being driven past Arnoun, SLA* militiamen manning the outpost in the occupied village fired shots near the car.
"The harassment meted out to the residents of Yohmor highlights the villages susceptibility to "Israeli" assaults after it found itself largely cut off from the rest of Lebanon following "Israel's" annexation of neighboring Arnoun in April.
""Israeli" troops manning Beaufort Castle began spraying machine-gun fire along the 1-kilometer road between Arnoun and Yohmor at around 5am, Hizbullah fighters ambushed another "Israeli" patrol at 6am. No casualties were reported.
"Although vehicles were allowed to pass between midday and early evening, "Israeli" troops in the castle fired 81mm mortar shells and SLA militiamen based in Arnoun continued to rake the surrounding countryside with heavy machine-gun fire.
"Yorge Gasser, the deputy head of the International Committee for the Red Cross in Lebanon, said that Yohmor residents requested the organizations help in transporting 19 students who were due to take their exams.
There were also two women who needed check-ups at hospital one was pregnant and the other needed dialysis treatment, Gasser said. We contacted the SLA and asked if we could transport them to Nabatieh.
Yohmor resident Hussein Alleiq, 22, said that it was the first time the "Israelis" had blocked the road by machine-gun fire since Arnoun was incorporated into the occupation zone.
Yohmor is one of the more isolated villages along the front line with the Litani River Gorge, to the south and east, separating it from the occupation zone. The frequently shelled open grassland around the Hamra farmstead lies to the west and Beaufort Castle to the north.
Despite its proximity to the zone and "Israeli" soldiers in the castle, the village has largely escaped the rigors of occupation.
Only two or three families have left the village since April, Alleiq said. Theyre people who work in Nabatieh and cant afford the risk of being trapped in Yohmor.
The residents held a sit-in at the villages husseiniyeh in the afternoon to protest the "Israeli" harassment. Mohammed Ayoub, 52, said he was grateful for the assistance provided by the ICRC to ease the suffering of residents living along the frontline including Yohmor and Arnoun.
Gasser said that the events in Yohmor Friday were rather exceptional, although the ICRC is used to helping the inhabitants of frontline areas. Its not every week that a road is closed and under attack, he said.
The ICRC regularly contacts the "Israelis" and the SLA to allow residents permission to work in their fields.
Gasser said that life in Arnoun had returned more or less to normal despite a constant SLA presence. Residents didnt have access to their fields but we worked it out with the SLA. The residents can also come and go through a passageway in the barbed wire, he said.
"Other than the families that departed immediately after the "Israelis" re-took the village, no one else has left", Gasser said (1)
Sayyed Nassrallah answers to Satterfield
(1)
"Hizbullah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah took U.S. Ambassador
David Satterfield to task over remarks the diplomat made regarding the
April Understanding. When the US ambassador speaks of the April Understanding,
he intentionally precedes it with references to the Katyushas before mentioning
the "Israeli" aggressions on civilians and infrastructure, Nasrallah said
referring to Satterfields comments last week following meetings with Lahoud
and Prime Minister Salim Hoss.
He does not respect the civilians of this country or its victims, Nasrallah added. Referring to the "Israeli" clampdown on Yohmor Friday, in which a seven-year-old girl was wounded by an exploding mortar round and residents attempting to leave the village were shot at, Nasrallah condemned the lack of response.
Where are Satterfields comments on that? Isnt this child a civilian?
Was she armed? he asked. He who bets on Americans to protect a city must
remember that the U.S. administration prevented the UN Security Council
from condemning "Israel" for the Qana massacre, he added.
Man dies of injuries from "Israeli" attack
(2)
A man who was among 36 wounded during the "Israeli" air strike on Baalback
10 days ago died of his wounds Sunday.
Abbas Toufeili, who underwent several operations during the past week, was taken to the American University Hospital suffering serious wounds in several parts of his body.
He raises to nine the number of civilians killed in the air raids. Another 64 were wounded.
Satterfield "promoting" pressure on Lebanon
(1)
"US ambassador to Lebanon David Satterfield is once again "promoting"
US pressure on Lebanon, as the restart of negotiations is approaching.
"Following a meeting with House Speaker Mr. Nabih Berri, Satterfield said that all parties should fundamentally back down from what he called as "violent acts in south Lebanon", if they want peace.
"Despite Satterfield's call to "strict implementation of the April Understanding" he avoided commenting on the partial "Israeli" pull outs".
"On the other hand, it is well known that Hizbullah will proceed with the military operations until the "Israeli" occupation army is driven out of south Lebanon and Western Beqaa, with consideration to avoiding civilians from the acts of vengeance sought by the "Israeli" army and the collaborators each time the Islamic Resistance succeeds in hitting or achieving a victory against them".
"Definitely, this will pressure the enemy to withdraw from occupied Lebanese villages and cities".
"Israeli" aggressions again and again
"Tyre fishermen are still being aggressed and harassed by the "Israeli"
occupation for the third week.
This morning (Monday) the "Israeli" gunboats pursued the fishermen
to the south of Tyre near Qlaileh where they forced them to leave their
fishing nets behind, after they fired heavy machine guns at them.
On the ground, the "Israeli" artillery bombarded orchards, fields and woods in the vicinities of Haddatha, Aita al-Jabal, Sraira and al-Qatrani, while intensive warplanes' hovering accompanied the shelling" (2)
However, the "Israeli" occupation troops staged the following aggressions
(3):
Between 00:05 and 12:00, Sawan area was bombarded by eight 155mm missiles.
Between 10:35 and 15:55, six 155mm missiles were fired at Haddatha
woodland.
18:35, the perimeters of Baraasheit town exposed to a barrage of 12.7mm
heavy machine gun bullets.
Between 18:40 and 21:55, Jib Soweid area was bombarded by thirteen
155mm missiles.
21:45, several tank rounds struck Mount Al-Rafih.
Between 22:05 and 22:30, ten 155mm missiles slammed into Mount Al-Zaatar.
22:40, Qaissieh Valley was shelled by five rounds.
Syrian assistance for Lebanon
(4)
"Technicians at the Electricité du Liban (EDL) had began installing
three power transmitters out of ten truck loads of power accessories that
arrived in Lebanon Saturday coming from Syria as a gift.
"When these transmitters are installed the power feed for the Capital (Beirut) and the suburbs will increase to 18 hours each 24."
"On the other hand, Prime Minister Dr. Salim al-Hoss received a phone call from his Syrian counterpart Mahmoud al-Zouabi, informing the PM about President (Hafez) al-Assad decision to supply Lebanon with 60,000 tons of cement as a gift from Syria to Lebanon to help it rebuild the destruction caused by the daily "Israeli" aggressions against Lebanon".
"Israeli" occupation freed Tyre fishermen
(7)
"The "Israeli" occupation forces this morning (Tuesday) freed the Lebanese
fishermen abducted yesterday by the "Israeli" enemy gunboats, three kilometers
south to the Tyre coast near Qlayleh.
After eight hours of abduction, during which the fishermen's boats were thoroughly searched, they returned to their homes".
"The fishermen are: Ali Atwi Muslmani, Ammar al-Zarzour, Sayyed Abu Jomaa, Jomaa Jomaa, Bilal Audi, Badih Audi and Badih Tusca"
"The "Israeli" occupation also freed Abbass Rashidi, a Khiam resident, after two weeks of abduction at the Khiam prison, because he refused to pay tributes for the collaborators".
Collaborators burned orchards in Hasbaya
(2)
The collaborating militia yesterday (Monday) set a huge fire in orchards
and fields in the western vicinity of Mimes in the occupied zone in south
Lebanon.
The area residents said the fire is the second of its kind in one week. It started when six collaborators in the Ain Qinya front line, fired phosphoric bullets two kilometers deep into the liberated areas, causing a huge fire in Grape vines and olive orchards.
Firefighters from Hasbaya worked very hard to control and put out the raging fire.
Security forces said the orchards belong to Mhanna Abu Hamdan, Youssef Abu Hamdan, Fayez Abu Hamdan, Mhanna Barkat and Hamza Alameh.
It was reported that the fire came as a response to the injury of an occupation soldier at the outpost of al-Radar two days ago.
Hoss wary of promises
(1)
"Prime Minister Salim Hoss on Wednesday injected a note of criticism
into the general optimistic mood sparked by the arrival of a new government
in "Israel", accusing Ehud Barak of failing to commit himself to an unconditional
withdrawal from Lebanon".
I dont want to be pessimistic when many are expressing optimism about the possibility of resuming the peace process in the region, Hoss told reporters. But I noted Baraks omission of Resolution 425, which calls for an unconditional "Israeli" pullout, when he talked about his intent to pull "Israeli" occupation forces out of Lebanon within a year.
"Hoss was referring to comments made by Barak in his inaugural speech as premier in which he promised to revive peace negotiations with Syria and withdraw troops from Lebanon.
Hoss said that Lebanon remained committed to Resolution 425 and rejects any term that "Israel" may link to a withdrawal.
"Also adopting a wary tone was Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, a leading Shiite cleric, who said that there would be no genuine peace, just a settlement imposed on the Arab and Islamic world. He said the settlement would stem from U.S. pressure and Arab weakness.
Fireman dies of wounds from "Israeli" blitz
(2)
"A fireman who was wounded during "Israel's" air strikes on infrastructure
facilities last month died Wednesday, bringing the total casualties of
the attacks to 10".
"Mohammed Ahmad Baltaji died of severe burns and wounds he sustained while trying to put out a fire at the Jamhour power plant after it was attacked by "Israeli" fighter-bombers. Four other firemen were also killed in the attack".
"Baltaji is the latest fatality after a civilian who was wounded in the attack died in Baalback on Sunday.
Prayers will be held at the Martyrs Mosque in Shatila on Thursday. He will be buried at the Martyrs Cemetery".
INTERNATIONAL PANEL TO RESUME MEETINGS
(1)
""Israeli" Prime Minister Ehud Barak said, "Israel" would take part
in a meeting next week of the international group that monitors the south
Lebanon April ceasefire understanding. The announcement reversed a decision
made last week by the previous government to pull "Israel" out of the five-nation
group. The committee was supposed to have met last week to discuss Lebanese
and "Israeli" complaints following "Israel's" nighttime aerial blitz on
Lebanon and Hizbullah's Katyusha rocket attacks on northern "Israel". "
Blast on eve of Monitoring Group session
(1)
"The Monitoring Group convenes in Naqoura on Tuesday to hear a record
37 complaints, the first session to be held since Ehud Barak overturned
a decision by the outgoing "Israeli" government to abandon the April Understanding".
"Lebanon has lodged 16 complaints and "Israel" has submitted the other 21, the largest number to be received by the group in its three years of existence. The majority of the protests stems from the violence last month".
"President Emile Lahoud has instructed the Lebanese delegation to press for a condemnation of "Israel's" air raids, in which 10 civilians died.
"A Western diplomatic source expected the meeting to be concluded swiftly, despite the number of complaints. They will be dealing with the actions of the previous government and I doubt they will want to waste time on this, he said.
"The delegates are expected to agree to group together the large number of complaints dealing with the June escalation and blame both sides for violating the agreement".
"ISRAEL" STEALING SOUTH LEBANON SOIL AGAIN, LEBANON SAYS
(1)
"Lebanon today (yesterday) called on the United Nations to take action
against "Israel" following reports that it is stealing fertile soil from
the occupied village of Marjeyoun in south Lebanon. The Lebanese permanent
delegation at the world body asked the UN to investigate the reports and
halt the theft. This is not the first time "Israel" was accused of such
an action. Last year, "Israel" admitted that civilian contractors from
the northern Galilee systematically stole soil from the occupation zone".
Occupation forces expelled a family from Shibaa
(1)
"Khadijeh Saab and her four children this morning (Thursday) arrived
very tired at the Kfar Tibneet crossing after spending the whole night
under the mercy of the "Israeli" occupation soldiers.
"Khadijeh said the "Israeli" soldiers stormed her house yesterday afternoon and took her with the children to the collaborator's post in the area before driving all five to the crossing point and telling them they can not return to their hometown Shibaa in the occupied zone.
"Mrs Saab arrived in Shibaa two days ago to spend the summer vacation there with her four children, the eldest one is ten years old.
"In addition, the "Israeli" enemy expelled Nadia Abboud Zahra, also from Shibaa, when the "Israeli" soldiers drove her to the same crossing and told her she can not return to her town."
Three towns in occupied zone stormed by enemy soldiers
(2)
"The "Israeli" occupation forces renewed their storming campaign which
started four days ago after the Islamic Resistance attack against collaborator
Ahmed Shebli Saleh who was seriously injured.
"Information from the occupied zone said the "Israeli" occupation and some collaborators last night stormed the occupied towns of Ramia, Odeissy and Aita al-Shaaeb.
"They arrested several civilians, took them to the Saf al-Hawa investigation center and detained them in very bad health conditions", the information added.
ISRAEL SHELLS HOMES IN SOUTH LEBANON ...(1)
Israel has violated the April cease-fire understanding when shells
damaged houses in the villages of Yohmor Shkeif and Arnoun. A UNIFIL position
was also targeted in south Lebanon prompting the peacekeeping force to
file a complaint with Israel.
Israeli occupation troops shelled the southern front line village of Yohmor Shkeif .Two houses were damaged in the attacks. Israeli shelling also targeted the nearby village of Arnoun. The road leading to both villages also came under sniper fire. The UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) filed an official protest to Israel after two shells fell on a peacekeeping base in southern Le. Two 155mm shells hit a position of the Finnish battalion in Taibe in the western sector of the Israeli-occupied zone in southern Lebanon, causing damage. This was not the first time a UN position was targeted. Last May an Irish peacekeeper was killed and two others injured when the Israeli allied militia shelled their post in Baarasheet. The attack prompted the Irish government to warn that it would reconsider its participation in the force if such attacks recur. The nine-nation UNIFIL force has lost 227 peacekeepers since it was deployed in southern Lebanon in 1978 after an Israeli invasion of the region.
However, the IR released a communiqué in which it reported the
following aggressions which staged by the Israeli occupation forces
... (2)
5:15 a barrage of 12.7 mm. heavy machine gun bullets struck the surroundings
of Baraasheit compound
15:25 the south of Jibal El-Botom village was bombarded by seven 155
mm. missiles.

81-mm. rounds and five 155 mm. missiles.
16:20 Mount Zaatar was shelled by four 155-mm. missiles
17: 20 nine 155-mm. missiles stormed into the peripheries of Toulin
village.
UN Chief condemned Israel for shelling
UN base ... (1)
UN Secretary- General Kofi Annan condemned Tuesdays shelling of a
Unifil position by an Israeli artillery unit, saying Finnish peacekeepers
narrowly escaped with their lives. Finnish troops had a narrow escape when
five Israeli 155mm artillery rounds exploded close to their position near Wadi Hojeir in the central sector of the occupation zone. Two rounds directly hit the post, while three other shells fell between 4 and 25 meters from their position near Qantara, a Unifil spokesman said.
There were no casualties but two prefabricated huts were destroyed and a power line was cut. It was only because of the quick reaction of the Finnish troops manning the position and a great deal of luck that there were no casualties. The damage was considerable. the spokesman said.
The spokesman said the incident, which occurred despite Israeli assurances, is deeply unsettling.
The secretary-general condemns this attack against United Nations personnel and calls on the government of Israel to take all necessary measures to ensure Israel and its allies respect the noncombatant status of Unifil peacekeepers, a UN spokesman in New York said.
In May and June, Irish positions were targeted by the Israels militia and on May 21, an Irish soldier was killed by a mortar round and another was wounded.
A total of 227 Unifil peacekeepers have been killed since deploying in the south in 1978.
Israeli occupation arrested several residents
in Aita al-Shaeb ... (2)
Witnesses in the occupied zone in south Lebanon said the Israeli occupation
forces and their collaborators during the last two days stormed the occupied
town of Aita al-Shaeb in the Bint Jbeil district and arrested several residents.
Among the arrested were Zahra Hassan Rida, 17, a school student, Ali Hassan Nasser, Mohammed Mossa Rida, Mohammed Ahmed Jamil and a resident from the Droubi family.
However, the Israeli occupying forces launched the following aggressions
: (IR) statement
4:00 three 120 mm> shells hit Slouqi Valley.
5:55 the west of Baraasheit town exposed to barrage of 12.7 mm. heavy
machine gun bullets.
Between 14:00 and 15:15 Mount Sojod was bombarded by twenty 120-mm.
shells.
Israeli occupation punishes Aita al- Shaeb
Going in and out from the town of Aita al Shaeb in the occupied zone
in South Lebanon is still restricted by the Israeli occupation forces who
also cut off the supply of water and power to the town.
The occupation's blockade against Aita al-Shaeb, which started ten days ago, is beginning to affect the steadfast residents, especially the sick and the elderly who are in dire need of medication and food, a resident said by phone from inside the sieged town.
Most bothering are the storming and arrest acts who included ten youth, the older one is aged at less than 19, some of then came to spend the summer vacation in their hometown, the resident added.
Last night, a joint Israeli army and intelligence force stormed the occupied town and arrested Mohammed Nehme Rida, 16, and Hassan Moussa Rida, 15, after releasing Zahra Hassan Rida, 17, a school girl arrested yesterday morning (Wednesday).
The blockade was imposed directly after the Islamic Resistance's (IR) roadside bomb attack against collaborator Ahmed Shebli Saleh who was seriously injured.
But when the Israelis failed to trace the IR Mujahedeen who staged the attack and returned to their base safely, the enemy forces imposed the blockade and started the arrests of innocent youth who not related to the attack at all.
Israeli enemy allowed collaborators to use civilians as human
shields
The Israeli occupation forces lately permitted their collaborators
to use civilians in the occupied zone in south Lebanon as human shields
to protect themselves.
Security sources said the collaborators consider the crossings from and to the occupied zone as "entrances to absolute death" and that the Resistance's Mujahedeen know very well how to avoid and preserve the civilians.
Previous experiences prooved that the Mujahedeen have a capability to accurately define and determine their targets and can wait for hours and days in order to detonate their bombs when the scene is free of civilians, the sources added.
During the past ten days, the Islamic Resistance's (IR) succeeded to infiltrate the Israeli occupation security measures in three different occasions.
The first attack seriously injured collaborator Ahmed Shebli Saleh, the second killed collaborator Kamil Badawi in Kfarhouna and the third bomb targeted a bus carrying Israeli soldiers near al-Bayyada.
These three operations prompted the Israeli occupation's command to intensify their patrols on the roads of the occupied zone.
OCCUPATION FORCES EXPEL WOMAN AND HER DAUGHTER FROM ZONE
Israeli allied militiamen today expelled Wafa Melhem and her two-year
old daughter from the occupied village of Chebaa. Melhem's husband, a former
Israeli-allied militiaman was expelled from Chebaa five months ago. Dozens
of Chebaa residents have been driven out of the village since the beginning
of the year.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN SOUTH LEBANON
Israeli occupation forces pursued today their aggression against south
Lebanon, whereby Israeli artillery pounded the outskirts of Majdel Selm,
Khirbit Selm, Al-Sawaneh, Al-Jmaijmeh and Al-Qayssieh valley in the central
sector.
In a statement issued by the Lebanese Resistance, Amal Movement, it declared that a unit of its men attacked with RPGs and machine-guns the Israeli position in Teebah Project, inflicting severe material damage.
On the other hand, Israeli occupation forces deported the citizen, Wafaa' Selim Milhem, and her two-year old daughter, from the village of Shebaa' via Zamrayya Crossing.
In another development, UNIFIL's Information Office organized a tour for the international and local visual medias in the UNIFIL's Finnish Contingent Center in Teebah, which was subjected to Israeli shelling last Monday night. The purpose of this media visit is to raise this issue locally and internationally.
It is to note that UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, condemned this shelling on UNIFIL Center, and asked Israel for guarantees so as to avoid such incidents in the future.
Israeli blokade of Aita Al-Shaab continues
(1)
The Israeli occupation forces and their collaborators have tightened
the ten-day blockade of Aita Al-Shaab preventing its residents from going
in and out of village.
The news reported that the Israeli military intelligence in the occupied zone, which is known by 504 apparatus, has been storming and ransacking its houses since three days.
The coming people asserted that the Israeli agents headed by Sharbel Barakat and Ahmad Shibli Saleh and Ali Al-Daoud, had arrested so far more than twenty nationals, mostly are children and elderly, who were subjected to torture on the pretext of cooperation with the resistance men. The enemy had confiscated the cellular phones from the residents.
Also, the Israeli collaborators, headed by the agents Akram Olayan, Riad Rahal and Youssef Hachem have been storming, since three days, into the villages of Jibbain, Tair Harfa, Rshaf, and investigating and beating the inhabitants.
Collaborators` manever at Zimrage post
(2)
In Eastern Sector, the news reported that the Israeli allied militiamen
stationed at Zimraya post had carried out a live ammunition maneuver during
which several shells landed near the villages of Meimess and Ain Fjour
causing damage to the olive groves in the area
FINNISH UN TROOPS DEMAND AN EXPLANATION FROM ISRAEL ON WHY THEIR
POST WAS HIT
(1)
Last week, a United Nations position was hit by Israeli shelling. Finnish
troops escaped harm. But the gravity of the incident prompted the UN Secretary
General Kofi Annan to call on Israel to respect the noncombatant status
of the peacekeeping force.
The area of operation of the Finnish battalion serving under the UN peacekeeping force in south Lebanon covers some 90 square kilometers. The Finnish troops like the other eight contingents in the force assist the local population and carry out patrols to try to maintain calm and peace in the south.
But at times they have had to pay the price. Not too long ago, one of their positions 9-33 was targeted. To reach it, we had to travel in a UN armored personnel carrier. The observation outpost is located in Wadi Hojeir, a valley just on the green line separating the zone Israel occupies from government held territory. It is a volatile area less than three kilometers from the center of the occupied village of Taybeh. Five 155mm artillery shells exploded inside and around the position. (NS: Juho Poyhtari, Taybeh Post Commander told Future Television: "we were very lucky no one was hurt or killed. There were six people at the position). But material damage was immense. Accommodation and storage rooms in the position were totally destroyed. A power cable, a water tank and equipments like fire extinguishers and fire fighting water barrels were also damaged. There were no casualties because the troops took shelter after the first impact. Two artillery rounds directly hit the battalion's post while anotherthree rounds fell between four and twenty meters from their position. The fire emanated from an Israeli manned position southeast of the UN post.
(NS: Daljeet Bagga, UNIFIL Press and Information Officer told Future Television: "at the local level we met with the commander of the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) and they apologized but we have not received anything in writing, we are doing our best to illicit a response on why it happened and an explanation so that it won't happen again). The Israelis have still to provide an explanation on why the grenades overshot their target even though they are well aware of the UN compound's position. (NS: Hasan Seklawi, UNIFIL information officer told Future Television: "UNIFIL has been here for more than 20 years, things like this happen, caught in the middle). The UN Secretary General Kofi Annan condemned the attack on the Finnish base. He called on Israel to respect the non-combatant status of the UN peacekeeping force. (NS: Bagga saying: "we received a commitment from the Israeli Defense Forces last time we received that commitment when the incident on May 31 when an Irish soldier was killed. We thought it would be the last incident but again it happened. This is not very good) On May 31, a UN position manned by Irish troops was hit by mortars fired by Israeli allied militiamen. One Irish soldier was killed and two were seriously wounded. The post was badly damaged. UNIFIL held Israel responsible for that attack. At the time, the Irish government threatened to reconsider its participation in the force if such attacks recur. Ever since UNIFIL deployed in south Lebanon in 1978, peacekeepers have been caught in the crossfire. 227 of them died. Many of them in the line of duty.

Elsewhere, residents in Baraasheet lived a hard night yesterday when the Israeli occupation fired heavy machine guns and mortar rounds against the town's residential neighborhood.
For three consecutive hours, the enemy's soldiers at the Baraasheet outpost targeted the town and struck the houses of Diab Mehdi, Jamil Shebab, Hussein Shehab, Hanna Yaacoub, Abu Akram Farhat, Ahmed Farhat, Adnan Farhat, Fawzi Audi, Mohamad Audi, Hussein Yassine.
It was noticed that the Israeli occupation forces were targeting the town's Mosque that was directly hit and damaged, but the Mosque's servant miraculously escaped death. .. (2)
However the IR issued a communiqué in which it reported the following aggressions which were launched by the Isreali occupation forces :
2:55 the surroundings of the new Beit Yahoun post came under five 60
mm. rounds and a barrage of 12.7 mm heavy machine gun bullets.
4:45 the western side of Baraasheit town and the surroundings of Beit
Yahoun outpost were subjected to 12.7 mm heavy machine gun fire.
Between 9:40 and 10:25 four 155 mm. missiles hit Qaissieh valley.
