Aggressions

  August Wednesday 4 -1999:

"Israeli" aggressors intercept a cargo ship near Tyre…(1)
"The "Israeli" occupation forces at dawn today (Tuesday) escalated the aggressions against south Lebanon, as the "Israeli" gunboats intercepted the commercial cargo ship "Mondial" near the Tyre sea- front and kept it for 2 hours.

"The ship sailed from Hamburg-Germany carrying 118 cars aboard. The cars belong to Lebanese businessmen who said that the "Israeli" enemy often does such interception to collect money (tributes) that will be later used to finance the ailing collaborating militia.

But the Lebanese businessmen refused to reveal the sum of money they were forced to pay for the "Israeli" aggressors.

"On the other hand, the "Israeli" warplanes renewed their raids against the liberated villages, dropping several air-to-ground missiles on the vicinity of Jibaa.

"Earlier, the warplanes intensively hovered over the areas of al-Nabatieh and Iqleem al-Toffah, staging mock raids.

"Moreover, the "Israeli" artillery bombarded the outskirts of al-Loweizeh in Iqleem al-Toffah and the woods of Oqmata and Sojod with 120 and 155mm rounds from the enemy's emplacement in al-Zafatteh and al-Rihan hills.

"Al-Loweizeh residents spent all last night in bomb shelters after being targeted by "Israeli" heavy machine gun fire from the occupation's outpost in Bir Kallab. Several houses inside the town were reported damaged.

"Furthermore, civilian Mariam Srour, 45, was injured when her house in al-Mansouri was struck by an "Israeli" bomb".

Aita al-Shaab still suffering from blockade…(2)
"The steadfast residents of Aita al-Shaab are still suffering from the blockade imposed by the "Israeli" occupation forces against their peaceful town.

"This morning (Tuesday), after a one-month blockade, the expelled inhabitants of Aita staged a sit in front of the UNIFIL'S HQ in Tyre, lifting banners condemning the blockade and calling for the release of all the detainees.

"They also delivered a memorandum to the UNIFIL's command, explaining the circumstances of the siege and the arrests of elders, women and children, in addition to the town's youth.

"Moreover, the protesters denounced the cut of water supply, the shootings inside the houses and the threats of destroying the houses of the steadfast residents who refuse to cooperate with the occupation forces.

"The demonstrators called on the UNIFIL to interfere and lift the blockade to allow the passage of food and medical supplies, in addition to the return of confiscated mobile phones".

Hizbullah: Aita al-Shaab siege fortifies steadfastness…(3)
"Hizbullah today (Tuesday) called on all human and international committees to reveal the atrocities of the "Israeli" occupation forces and work for the lifting of the blockade imposed against Aita al-Shaab to allow humanitarian aid inside the town.

"These repeated atrocities show that the "Israeli" occupation is aiming at breaking the steadfastness of our people, a Hizbullah statement stressed.

"The statement said these aggressions reveal the troubles the "Israeli" occupation is suffering from on the occupied Lebanese soil.

"The "Israeli" acts and measures, adding to the steadfast of our people, are strengthening the determination of our Mujahedeen to resist for the return of the land and to force the enemy to pay a high price for its aggressive measures against our innocent civilians", the statement added.

Blida, after Aita al-Shaab, Seiged…(4)
"Information from the occupied zone in south Lebanon said a seige is being imposed against the town of Blida, by what is left of the collaborating militia, to force the residents to join the dismantled militia.

"According to the information, the "Israeli" occupation ordered the collaborators to recruit young men to reinforce the ailing militia.

"At once, collaborators Abu Burhan, Hassib Farhat, Youssef Ali Ibrahim, Jamal Moussa Ali Hussein, Mohamad Hussien Hijazi and Hussein Ali Hassan surrounded the town, preventing everyone from going in or out.

"Following this act, the collaborators stormed the town's houses and counted all men and youth who have the capability to carry a weapon, telling them they should apply at the recruitment camps of the collaborators or pay a sum of $10,000 to be excused from the obligatory recruitment.

"The families of these young men refused this move and told the collaborators that they will not sacrifice their children for the service of the Zionist enemy who is occupying our land in south Lebanon", the information added.

SENSE OF NORMALCY NOT RESTORED TO Kfar Houna…(5)
" When "Israeli"-backed forces withdrew from the Jezzine enclave in southern Lebanon last June, it was uncertain how long it would take before normalcy is restored to villages in the area. We visited the front-line village of Kfar Houna, and as our report suggests, the shadow of occupation still haunts the region. And there is a clear security vacuum there".

“These elevated rolling hills are an ideal escape from the sweltering summer heat. They are also a haven for "Israeli" allied militiamen whose presence in this front-line region continues to haunt Kfar Houna residents. The village was liberated from "Israeli" occupation in June, and there is a lot of this around: Concrete, sand, and machinery. People are returning after a seventeen year absence.

(NS: Lutfi Habhab, Kfar Houna resident, telling FTV: "we will rebuild this village, people have been returning, mainly for weekends, the reason villagers left in the first place was because "Israeli" allied militiamen wanted to recruit young men to their ranks, everyone refused, so the militiamen kidnapped two families, and people were scared"). Kfar Houna witnessed some of the worst clashes between Lebanese resistance fighters and retreating occupation forces in June. (BRIDGE: the first occupation checkpoint is less than 200 meters away from here but there are rumors in Kfar Houna that "Israeli" allied militiamen have been vacating the post) The post is a short drive from the village square. But there have been many reports indicating that "Israel's" proxy force is retreating into outposts deep in the zone "Israel" occupies. Few minutes after he went through a militia checkpoint, we asked this cab driver whether occupation troops are manning the checkpoint, he said 'yes'. But Kfar Houna residents insist militiamen are on the move".

"(NS: Lutfi Habhab, telling FTV: "Militiamen have left the Kfar Houna post, they are in Rihan and Aramta, there is no one at the post, the further they get from the village, the more stable life becomes") The village square is bustling with people. The center of activity is around the top of an "Israeli" tank which was blown up by the resistance during clashes in the village years back. Today, children, including those here for the weekend, can once more enjoy their summer vacation.

(NS: Zeinab Abbas, Kfar Houna native, saying: "...three weeks ago, was the first time I came here, and it was very great thing to discover my village for the first time because my grandpa used to tell me lots of things about it (CUTAWAY OF KIDS PLAYING) today and after I discovered all the beauty, I feel I am ready to fight any occupation to live free in my village..") Young men who avoided coming here during the occupation for fear of detention and forced recruitment to the "Israeli" militia force, today enter and leave the village freely.

(NS: Tarek Mohsen, Kfar Houna native, saying: "I only returned here a month and a half ago, many people died or got sick during our absence, but we could not come here due to the occupation, but thanks to resistance fighters who spared their blood for our freedom we are here today... but the main problems is that there is no presence for police or security forces here)
In contrast to other areas of Kfar Houna, this neighborhood which is only a glance away from occupation troops, lay deserted. A few days ago, machine gun fire rained down on these alleys. Residents said a number of roadside bombs have also been detonated in this area, blaming the incidents on occupation troops.

(Standup: No sense of normalcy will be restored to this village before occupation forces who are stationed just down this road withdraw from the area. For now, residents of Kfar Houna have to live with the fact that their village marks the beginning of the zone "Israel" occupies in southern Lebanon. LEBANON CALLS ON UN TO PUT AN END TO "ISRAELI" SEIGE OF THE BINT JBEIL VILLAGE…(1)
" "Israel's" blockade of the occupied southern village of Bint Jbeil has entered its second week. Bint Jbeil residents called on the international community to intervene and pressure "Israel" to lift the siege. The government has also demanded United Nations intervention to end the blockade".

" Another southern Lebanese village is under "Israeli" blockade. Bint Jbeil, deep inside the zone "Israel" occupies in southern Lebanon, has been under an "Israeli" siege for eleven days. No one is allowed to enter or leave the village, and food and medicine shortages are imminent. Today, Bint Jbeil inhabitants living in Beirut, held a sit-in at the headquarters of the press syndicate in Beirut. They are demanding international pressure on "Israeli" to lift the blockade on the occupied southern village. The rally was attended by deputies, human rights delegates, and a number of NGO's. Deputy Abdel Hamid Beydoon said the coercive measures applied by "Israeli" occupation troops in the south, including Bint Jbeil, amount to what he called terrorism.

The outside world, he added, must know about the suffering of southerners under "Israeli" occupation. MP Mohammed Fneish warned that as long as "Israeli" occupation persists, southerners can expect suffering and torture, but the Hizbullah deputy pledged resistance attacks will drive "Israelis" out of Lebanon. Human rights group called on the international community to pressure "Israel" to lift the siege on Bint Jbeil, along with the occupied village of Aita Shaab which has been under a similar blockade for weeks now. Lebanon's Prime Minister Selim Hoss, in his capacity as foreign minister, asked Beirut's representative at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Ambassador Samir Mubarak, to demand pressure on "Israel" by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to lift the blockade. Ambassador Mubarak was asked to contact diplomats in New York and explain to them this latest "Israeli" aggression. UN peace-keepers and International Red Cross Committee volunteers have been able to deliver much needed humanitarian to the occupied and besieged villages of Bint Jbeil and Aita Shaab. "Israel" has been occupying parts of southern Lebanon since 1978 in clear violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 425, which calls on the Jewish state to immediately and unconditionally withdraw its occupation forces from Lebanese territory".

Occupation forces violated understanding again…(1)
““Israeli” occupation forces have once again resorted to their attempts to pressurize Lebanon by violating the April Understanding and deliberately targeting civilians, as “Israeli” rounds last night rained down the village of Zawtar al-Gharbieh.
"A 155 mm round hit the house of Hussein Ouleiq (in the village's western neighborhood).

UN Interim forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has repeatedly affirmed that only the “Israeli” occupation forces and their collaborators use this type of shells.

"Ouleiq and his family narrowly escaped death, for they had left the house minutes before it was hit.

“Israeli” artillery this morning fired-scores of 155 mm and 120 mm rounds on the villages of Nabatieh and Iqleem al-Toffah, especially Wadi al-Hojeir, al-Ghandourieh, Oqmata and the Sojod Hilltops.

"Meanwhile, “Israeli” MK espionage drones hovered over southern areas, while the occupation outposts overlooking Nabatieh combed their surroundings with heavy machine gun fire".

Lebanon moves to stop siege of towns…(2)
"Lebanese diplomacy has managed- through contacts with regional and world capitals - to lift the siege imposed by “Israeli” occupation forces on the villages of Aita al-Shaab, Blida, and Bint Jbeil.

"UNIFIL troops' efforts to distribute food supplies in the towns were blocked by the occupation's militia.

"The insistence of the international force, however, forced the agents to retreat and allow the UNIFIL to enter the villages that are still partially under siege.

"“Israeli” occupation forces are trying to benefit from the clampdown they are imposing on the towns, Lebanese security sources said.

"The occupation has told their so-called civil administration apparatus in the Hasbaya - Arqoub area to conduct accurate records of all the mobile phones and their owners, under the heading of "regulations and administration", the sources added.

"The occupation's step is in fact a prelude to confiscate the phones in case of any new siege, to prevent any leakage of information about enemy movements or the deteriorating morale of the occupation's militia, the sources concluded.

"The occupation command warned, through its "civil administration, against concealing any mobile phones, otherwise, the phones will be confiscated and their owners punished. It also demanded detailed information from the phone stores about the sales and the names of the customers".

Clampdown of Bint Jbeil and Aita al-Shaab continues; militiamen loot properties…(1)
"Although the "Israeli" occupation forces and their collaborators had confiscated the mobile phones in the towns they are besieging, information is still coming from the occupied zone in south Lebanon.

"Reports from the town of Bint Jbeil which has been under siege for two weeks said occupation troops and their collaborators have intensified their clampdown and adopted more revengeful measures against the steadfast people in the town including:

- Damaging food and medical supplies inside the houses they storm, especially flour, besides stealing light but valuable properties.

- Blocking water from reaching the towns of Bint Jbeil and Aita al-Shaab..

- Intensifying storming and arrest campaigns. Some people, including women and elderly, were arrested repeatedly in a bid to force them to cooperate with the occupation.

"According to the reports, agents Aql Hashem, Fawzi al-Saghir, and Ali Khalil Haidar - in cooperation with an "Israeli" occupation force - yesterday demolished the house of Adnan Bazzi after detaining his son Dani and taking him to al-Khiam detention center 15 days ago".

July: 130 "Israeli" aggressions; Resistance retaliates with 12 operations…(2)
""Israeli" occupation forces staged 130 air, sea, and ground aggressions on Lebanese territories during July 1999. Air aggressions constituted 20.76% of the gross aggressions (10 raids).

"These assaults resulted in wounding two civilians, detaining 30 Lebanese people, expelling 19 people, damaging 15 houses, two cars and a mosque in the bombardment that targeted 28 villages and scores of fields and groves in villages adjacent to the occupied zone.

"On the other hand, the resistance retaliated with 112 operations against the occupation forces. The enemy acknowledged that one occupation soldier was killed and three others were wounded, while two militiamen were killed and three others were wounded during the month".

"ISRAELI" SAILORS PELT LEBANESE FISHERMAN WITH PRICKLY PEARS…(1)
" An "Israeli" navy ship opened fire on a Lebanese fishing boat in Lebanese waters before hosing the crew with water canon and then pelting them with prickly pears, port authorities in the southern city of Tyre said Sunday. The incident occurred Saturday at dawn when Mahmud Hussein, 26, and Ali Zaatar, 24, were fishing two kilometers off the coast near the southern Lebanese port of Tyre, the same sources said. The "Israeli" vessel came up close to the boat, which was hit by a machine-gun bullet, and the sailors aimed their water canon at the two young men. They then lobbed rotten potatoes and prickly pears -- a fruit with long spikes on its skin -- at Mahmud, who protested their right to fish the waters and waved a Lebanese flag. He was later treated for bruising at a hospital in Tyre, the port authorities said. "Israel" has maintained a partial blockade on Lebanon's ports for several years and fires on fishing boats that venture more than two kilometers off the coast. In the past six years, dozens of Lebanese fishermen have been injured in encounters with the "Israeli" navy, with 21 one of them being left disabled, the Tyre fishermen’s' union says".

SOUTHERNERS APPEAL TO THE WORLD TO LIFT SEIGE ON VILLAGES…(1)
"About a month ago, "Israel" besieged a number of villages in occupied southern Lebanon, not allowing anyone to enter or leave them. Beirut has appealed to the United Nations for help, and the government was informed that United Nations peace-keeping officials based in New York are holding contacts with "Israel" over the issue. Today (yesterday), residents of the besieged villages held a sit-in and called on the international community to intervene".

" (woman singing: "tanks are besieging us and we resist....") This old woman from occupied and besieged Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon wants the world to listen to her and help ease the plight of her village which has been under an "Israeli" siege for the past month. Mariam Bazzi along with tens of people from the occupied villages of Bint Jbeil, Aita Shaab, Ainata, Ramyeh, Houla, Srayra, and some Arkoub towns, are protesting against "Israel's" siege of the region. "Israeli" occupation forces have imposed a total blockade on the region, not allowing anyone to enter or leave the villages. Mariam Bazzi, whose relatives are in Bint Jbeil, called on US President Bill Clinton and UN Chief Kofi Annan, to decide on who is a "terrorist", people defending their rights and suffering or occupiers imposing hardships and breaching human rights declarations on daily basis? A committee representing the besieged villages gathered at UN House in downtown Beirut where they handed United Nations representatives a letter addressed to Secretary-General Kofi Annan, describing the plight of Lebanese under the "Israeli" blockade. The letter says occupation forces have been demolishing homes of innocent civilians, especially in Bint Jbeil, where Adnan Bazzi's home was a few days ago leveled. The letter details how "Israeli" forces have been parading their tanks in the villages, threatening villagers with expulsions, or detention if young men refuse to join the ranks of the "Israel's" proxy militia. The committee warned that there is a shortage of food and medicine as a result of the siege, adding "Israeli" forces have deliberately been burning agricultural produce in the villages. Tens of young men and elderly, the letter said, have been rounded up and detained by occupation troops, on grounds that they aid Lebanese fighters resisting "Israeli" occupation in southern Lebanon. Youssef who is from besieged Ainata, said his relatives there are under a physical and psychological blockade. "Israel", he said, has forbidden people there from contacting their relatives in Beirut. (NS: Youssef telling FTV: "it prevents people from entering, it closed the crossing points, it arrested many people and put them in Khiam, it burned the agricultural produce, which caused a decrease in the food supplies, and many people are suffering from illnesses...). A number of deputies attended the rally and voiced support to the villagers. Speakers compared the siege of villagers to hostage-taking. These villagers hope the United Nations, which issued Security Council resolution 425, calling on "Israelis" to withdraw from Lebanon, will intervene and pressure "Israel" to end its latest atrocity against southerners. The committee representing the besieged villages is planning to hold a support rally for villagers in the occupied zone at the Beit Yahoun border-crossing which links the zone to the rest of Lebanon on Sunday".

"ISRAEL" DESTORYS HOME AND CUTS POWER TO FIVE SOUTHERN VILLAGES…(2)
""Israeli" shelling on the front-line village of Baraacheit in southern Lebanon destroyed a house belonging to Najib Farhat. Lebanese police reported that five shells fired by occupation troops fell inside the village, but caused no casualties. Some twenty shells also landed at the outskirts of Baraacheit, destroying an electricity grid leaving four other villages without power".

However, the "Israeli" occupation forces staged the following aggressions (3):
2:05, the perimeters of Baraasheit subjected to a volley of 12.7mm heavy machine gun bullets.
7:40, two 155mm missiles hit Sawan area.
8:40, three 120mm shells struck the peripheries of Mlikh village.
Between 9:00 and 10:45, Mount Sojod was bombarded by eight 120mm shells and five 155mm missiles.
10:50, Mlita Hill was shelled by four 155mm missiles.
12:5, Baraasheit town came under two 120mm shells and one 60mm round.
18:45, two “Israeli” helicopter gunships raided into the perimeters of Majdal Zoun firing air-to-surface rockets damaging the house of Mohammad Ibrahim Faqih.
20:25, Qaissieh Valley was shelled by three 155mm missiles.
21:00, three 120mm shells hit Mount Sojod.
21:05, four 155mm missiles were fired at the perimeters of Froun village.
23:40, four 155mm missiles fell on Habboush River watercourse and three 120mm shells on Slouqi crossroad.
23:45, the peripheries of Arab Salim town came under four 81mm shells and several 155mm tank rounds.
23:50, five 155mm missiles were fired at Arab Salim River, whereas the surroundings of Qantara outpost subjected to a barrage of 12.7mm heavy machine gun bullets.

Occupation acknowledges besieging towns in south Lebanon…(1)
""Israeli" occupation army has acknowledged detaining a large number of people from the towns of Bint Jbeil and Aita al-Shaab during the siege it has been imposing on the towns.

"A spokesperson for the occupation army claimed that the detainees were "suspects" as "agents for Hizbullah" and that they have admitted to having supplied the party with information that it has used in launching attacks against the "Israeli" army and its militia.

"The spokesman added that weapons and explosives were found during the search the occupation had conducted in the towns.
"Meanwhile, the UN is exerting efforts to lift the siege which is imposed on the Lebanese towns in the area occupied by the "Israeli" forces.

"Lebanon's Representative at the UN Samir Mubarak said international officials have made contacts with the enemy government to put an end to the siege, release the detainees, and allow food and medical supplies to enter the besieged towns".

Monitoring Group blames "Israel"…(2)
"The five-nation Monitoring Group convened in Naqoura to hear 11 complaints, seven filed by Lebanon and four by "Israel".
""Israel" was judged to have violated the April Understanding by wounding a civilian and damaging houses, a telephone station and the electricity network during an artillery bombardment of Mansouri and Majdal Zoun on Aug. 3. "Other "Israeli" violations included damaging houses in Yohmor with flechette tank rounds and rocket-propelled grenades on Aug. 7, damaging a house and a car in Baraasheit on Aug. 10 and damaging a house in Majdal Zoun in an helicopter attack on Aug. 11.

Regarding an "Israeli" complaint over the death of a civilian in a roadside bomb attack on Aug. 4, Lebanon’s delegate said that the victim had been delivering material to an "Israeli" outpost and therefore could not be considered a civilian target.

"Although the group agreed that “the employment of civilians in military sites puts them at risk,” the attack was automatically judged a violation because a civilian had died".

“Israeli” aggressions on Lebanese territories…(1)
"“Israeli” warplanes roared over Lebanese areas all day long today (yesterday).

"Following the flights over southern areas, the enemy aircraft at 11:00 a.m. circled over Beqaa areas staging mock air raids and firing balloons to intercept anti-aircraft fire.

"Observers in Beirut said the occupation aircraft's hovering outside the military operations' areas, especially Beirut and Beqaa, aims to harm the tourism movement which is currently active in the country.

"As for the artillery aggressions, the areas of Oqmata, Sojod woods, Areed al-Zennar, the vicinity of the Bir Kallab outpost were bombarded with 155mm rounds by the occupation starting at 9:30 a.m. until the afternoon.

"Moreover, the occupation artillery shelled the Mount Abu Rkab which separates between Iqleem al-Toffah and the Western Beqaa.

"Meanwhile, the occupation's espionage drones hovered over the targeted areas".

However, the Islamic Resistance (IR) issued a statement in which it recorded the following aggressions on the Lebanese liberated areas (2):

Between 9:45 and 11:00, Mount Sojod was bombarded by fourteen 120mm shells.
9:45, three 120mm shells hit Oqmata area.
10:00, ten 81mm rounds slammed into Arid El-Zennar.
10:10, Mount Abou Rkab was targeted by two 120mm shells.
11:50, Mlikh village was targeted by three 120mm shells.

People of Ramia protest siege of their town…(3)
"The people of the occupied town of Ramia this morning staged a sit-in  front of the UNIFIL HQ in Tyre to protest the two-week-long siege of their town by the “Israeli” occupation forces.

In a memorandum they sent to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, the people underlined the suffering inflicted on the residents of the occupied town, especially when it comes to medical and food supplies.

"The memorandum also noted that the “Israeli” occupation has annexed parts of the town to the land of occupied Palestine; some of these annexed patches are agricultural fields whose harvests have not been collected yet.

"The countries which remain silent before such crimes perpetrated against innocent people must be considered accomplices in the crimes, the memorandum said.

"Upon his tour in the Lebanese territories occupied by the “Israeli” forces, enemy prime minister Ehud Barak encouraged his troops to besiege villages, and assault the Lebanese who remain steadfast in their villages".

“Israeli” spy held by security forces…(4)
"The Lebanese army intelligence has caught a spy who works for the “Israeli” intelligence (Mossad) red-handed, a Lebanese newspaper said today.

"Al-Kifah al-Arabi said the Lebanese security body arrested a Lebanese citizen, identified as H.A.A., as he was talking to the “Israeli” Mossad on a sophisticated radio.

The suspect was born in Bayada (south) but lived in the town of Zrarieh (south). He had used his affiliation to a local political movement as a cover, security sources said.

"The Lebanese army has confiscated videotapes, documents and a radio belonging to the spy, the daily said, adding that the spy was subjected to close observance which was conducted with ultimate secrecy until he was caught in the act".

Raising a family within clear sight of Beaufort…(5)
Since Arnoun’s occupation, the residents of Yohmor face constant “Israeli” Army harassment
"Seven-year-old Zeinab Hamzi is proud of her scar. Raising her T-shirt she shows off the purple welt running vertically below her belly button. The wound was caused by a piece of shrapnel from an exploding mortar round.

"Zeinab had been picking vine leaves on July 2 for her mother near her home in the frontline village of Yohmor when the shell landed three meters away.

“I felt a pain in my stomach and yelled for my mum to bring me some Kleenex to wipe away the blood,” she said. “When my mum saw what had happened she started screaming.”

Zeinab is the latest victim of the violence engulfing Yohmor which has been on the increase since the village found itself almost cut off from the rest of the country following the “Israeli” Army’s annexation of neighboring Arnoun into the occupation zone last March.

On Thursday, the five-nation Monitoring Group blamed “Israel” for violating the April Understanding by damaging eight houses in Yohmor with rocket-propelled grenades and the ‘flechette’ tank rounds, which discharge hundreds of 2 centimeter-long steel darts.

“They’re using flechettes a lot more than before,” noted Shawki Nasr, a schoolteacher at Yohmor school, whose house was one of the eight that were damaged.

“Morale is very low in the village,” he said. “It’s very tense here. You could be sitting quietly then, without warning, there is shelling.”

Nasr said his wife, Sonia, was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. “Her hands tremble for no reason,” he said. “When you talk to people, it’s as if they’re not paying attention. Nobody can concentrate. It’s very difficult.”

The harassment the villagers face comes from the “Israeli” troops in Beaufort castle. Only the top of a stone turret now an “Israeli” machine-gun post are visible from Nasr’s house at the edge of the village. The rest of the 12th century Crusader fortress is hidden by a hill. The soldiers manning the turret frequently fire the machine gun toward the village usually indiscriminately, as testified by the bullet holes in the walls of Nasr’s house.

“Israeli” foot patrols venture out of the castle at night to monitor the surrounding area for infiltrating guerrillas and to keep an eye on movement in the village.

One night three months ago, Hassan Alleik, 18, and his brother, Hussein, 17, were leaving their aunt’s house in the center of the village to return home. As they stepped into a pool of light cast from a street lamp, both teenagers were shot and wounded.

“I was hit by the first shot they fired. They were firing very close by. It was not a mistake, they were aiming at us,” said Hassan. He was hit in both legs and his left arm. His brother was wounded in one leg.

Nasr said that most of the shelling and shooting around the village occurred at night.

“They can see us during the day. So if someone is wounded when they fire at night they can claim it was a mistake as they didn’t know we were there,” he noted.

Sonia Nasr said that she and her husband had trained their two children Mohammed, 8, and Ali, 7, to watch television as often as possible to prevent them from roaming too far from their home.

“It’s a shame. We would like them to have a healthy rural upbringing, but it’s too dangerous. We get worried every time they’re outside. At least if they hear fighting, they run home straight away,” she said.

"The impression of isolation is reinforced by the reluctance of most residents to leave Yohmor on the usual errands because of the possibility of roadblocks manned by SLA militiamen or random shooting along the single road out of the village".

"There is no running water in Yohmor. Each household has to purchase containers of water which are transported into Yohmor by tractor. Only 10 percent of the agricultural land around Yohmor is cultivated as residents are too afraid to venture far".

With the tobacco harvest underway, many residents leave their homes before dawn to begin work.

“A few days ago, some farmers were shot at as they arrived in their fields and they had to run home,” said Nasr.
The tobacco season is almost over. But the olive harvest begins shortly afterwards.

“Our olive trees are even further from the village than the tobacco,” said Nasr. “What do we do then?”

"Israel" assassinated an IR heroe…(1)
Hizbullah: The crime will not go unpunished
Yesterday, "Israel" added a new crime to its record which is fraught of massacres and crimes. Khodor Salameh, one of the Islamic Resistance heroes, was martyred when the car he was driving exploded in the southern port city of Saida.

The Daily Star said that "the bombing, coming days after a military officer attached to Parliament’s security was arrested in Zrarieh on suspicion of spying for "Israel", prompted soldiers and Internal Security Forces personnel to set up checkpoints throughout Sidon.

"Hizbullah accused "Israel" of being behind the killing and vowed revenge.

"Ali Hassan Deeb, known as Abu Hassan, was killed instantly when two roadside bombs exploded simultaneously at 5.20pm on the northern side of the road between Hilalieh and Abra on the eastern edge of Sidon. His BMW saloon was blown to pieces, with the bulk of the vehicle hurled 20 meters down the road. The blast ignited the tinder-dry undergrowth on the side of the road.

"The explosion cast a huge pall of smoke into the air and the sound of the detonation startled residents throughout Sidon, with many hurrying into the streets to find out what had happened.

Civil Defense rescuers and firefighters rushed to the scene of the blast and extinguished the blazes. "Deeb’s body was taken to the Hammoud Hospital in Sidon. Troops and ISF personnel cordoned off the area and checked the identities of passing motorists. Searches of nearby rooftops were also ordered on the chance that the bombs were detonated by someone on the ground.

"Security sources said that the bombs were standard roadside charges, consisting of high explosives packed with ball bearings which act as shrapnel.

"As far as Hizbullah was concerned, there appeared to be no doubt that the assassination was carried out by the "Israelis", their first such operation in Lebanon since Ehud Barak’s rise to power in May. The group’s southern commander, Sheikh Nabil Qaouk, described Barak as the “No. 1 terrorist.”

“This crime will not go unpunished and "Israel" will regret its crime,” he said speaking at the scene of the attack.

"In a statement, Hizbullah said: “Abu Hassan joined the Islamic Resistance when it started in 1982 and spent a life full of jihad and sacrifice and martyrdom for God and in fighting the Zionist enemy during all the phases of resistance until his own martyrdom.”

"He survived a number of assassination attempts, most notably when an "Israeli" helicopter gunship targeted his car with a missile during the April war in 1996. Deeb was not in the car at the time but a male relative and a woman were killed. He was married with five children and was born in Kounine near Bint Jbeil in the occupation zone.

"The attack bore the hallmarks of an "Israeli" operation. Although roadside bombs are the favorite and deadliest weapon of the resistance, the "Israelis" also use them, usually planting the charges along known infiltration routes used by guerrillas into the occupation zone.

"The most telling evidence that indicated "Israeli" involvement in Monday’s blast were the pilotless reconnaissance planes “drones” that were seen in the skies above Sidon both before and after the blast.

"The "Israelis" have used drones in the past to relay radio signals which detonate roadside bombs. The most notable previous incident was in August 1997, when a drone triggered a triple roadside bomb blast in the village of Kfour near Nabatieh in which five Hizbullah guerrillas were killed.

"The operator back in "Israel" would have seen Deeb’s car approaching the ambush spot via the television camera mounted beneath the drone. As the car passed the two bombs, the operator would have sent a radio signal via the drone to detonate the charges".

"In northern "Israel", troops were on alert, according to security sources there. But the military did not order residents to seek shelter the normal practice when cross-border attacks are anticipated".

LEBANESE FISHERMAN WOUNDED BY "ISRAELI" NAVY FIRE…(3)
"A Lebanese fisherman was seriously wounded this morning when "Israeli" navy gunboats opened machine-gun fire on fishing boats off the coast of the southern port city in Tyre. 66 year old Ibrahim Arid received a bullet in his back and was evacuated by other fishermen toward the port of Tyre, where he was transported to hospital for surgery. According to the fishermen, an "Israeli" navy gunboat opened machine-gun fire without warning on four fishing boats off the coasts of Tyre. "Arid was wounded in the back and his boat was pierced by a hail of bullets. He managed to return to shore with the help of two fellow fishermen.

The three other boats also headed back," one fisherman told AFP. The "Israeli" navy has been imposing a sea blockade for several years on Lebanese fishermen in the Tyre area, preventing them from sailing more than one nautical mile off the coast. On March 1, the "Israeli" navy fired similarly without warning on fishing boats off Tyre, without inflicting casualties".

People of Qantara want to return to their town…(4)
"The town of Qantara is located on a set of hills and wadis 15 kms to the south west of Tyre. The town was doomed to have the "Israeli" occupation forces positioned on one of the opposite hilltops for 21 years.

"This fact has led to the displacement of 99% of the 45000 people who used to live in the town. Since the "Israeli" invasion of south Lebanon in 1982, the town has lost 15 martyrs; 30 of its residents were wounded, 25 others are held in the notorious al-Khiam detention center, 150 were houses destroyed, scores of groves were burned. "Israeli" forces, moreover, deliberately burned the woods surrounding the town.

"These figures came in a memorandum sent from the town's people to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. It was handed over to the UNIFIL's Liaison Officer Maj Eric Bodlen by a delegation from the town.

"The memorandum called for assisting the al-Qantara's people to return to the town following the withdrawal of the "Israeli" occupation forces from the Qantara Hilltop last week. It also wanted UNIFIL to set two checkpoints at the town's eastern side (opposite the occupation's outpost in Taibeh) and to the west facing Wadi al-Hojeir".

Cabinet: "Israeli" aggressions won't affect stability…(1)
"The Council of Ministers held its ordinary session yesterday afternoon at its headquarters near the National Museum. The session was headed by President Gen Emile Lahoud and attended by Prime Minister Dr Salim al-Hoss and ministers.

"At the opening of the session, President Lahoud stressed the coherence of the Lebanese stand in the face of the "Israeli" attempts that aim to harm Lebanon's stability.

"Assassinating one of the Resistance's leaders will not affect the firmness of this stand or the right to resist the occupation until it is removed, Lahoud said.

"The current phase requires unity of efforts and reduction of confusions and competitions at the internal level, he added, calling for the establishment of a democratic atmosphere through an objective opposition that would not harm the national morale at political, economic, or administrative levels.

Political rhetoric must be elevated to express democratic awareness and responsible freedom", the president concluded.

BARAK'S LEBANON POLICY INCLUDES ASSASSINATIONS, COMMANDO OPERATIONS, AND INFRASTRUCTURE BOMBING: KHALIL…(2)
"The head of parliament's foreign relations committee, Dr. Ali Khalil today (yesterday) warned that "Israeli" Prime Minister Ehud Barak intends to mount assassination attempts and commando operations on Lebanese territory, as part of his general policy for the country. "Israel" has been occupying parts of southern Lebanon since 1978, and has launched scores of invasions against Lebanon, and committed numerous massacres against civilians. Days before Barak took office, "Israel" launched a bombing campaign on June 24 that targeted Beirut's electricity stations and several bridges throughout the country".

"Israel" breaches the international law systematically…(3)
"The follow up committee for the release of Lebanese detainees in "Israeli" detention centers today appealed to Prime Minister Selim Hoss, in his capacity as foreign minister, to address the issue of detentions at the UN General Assembly later this fall. They called on Hoss to inform the international community of "Israel's" systematic breach of international law, by kidnapping Lebanese civilians and keeping them as hostages in occupied southern Lebanon and inside "Israel". They said any resumption of peace talks with "Israel" should be conditional on "Israel's" willingness to free some 128 Lebanese detained in its jails. Several human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have condemned the appealing living conditions at the detention centers".

ISRAEL CARRIES OUT RAIDS AGAINST SOUTHERN…(1)
""Israel" carried out air raids over valleys just outside the occupied zone. Police did not mention any casualties in the raids. The planes fired three air-to-ground missiles at 9:00 p.m. (1800 GMT) at an area between Zibqeen and Chaitieh, on the western edge of the zone. They returned 10 minutes later and fired three more. The planes resumed the attack an hour later on the edge of the central sector of the occupied zone. The "Israeli" planes fired four missiles close to Jibaa, in the Iqleem al-Toffah range".

An enemy espionage network was disclosed…(2)
It was revealed that a spy network, planted by the "Israeli" enemy in the Lebanese liberated areas, was dismantled yesterday.

The cell gathered security information about Hizbullah's cadres, centres and activities.

The security sources reported that on the first half of the present month, the Lebanese Intelligence apparatus arrested the "Israeli" agent H.A.N., who is a construction worker, from one of the villages of Marjeyoun District. He was detained on one of crossing points between the liberated and occupied areas.

The "Israeli" agent, quickly, acknowledged his relation with the "Israeli" intelligence through which he leaked information over Hizbullah's members and offices in Beirut, Beqaa and South Lebanon.

The security sources said that "Israeli" troops searched the agent's house in the occupied zone and interrogated a number of his relatives at Marjeyoun Barracks. In this regard, the "Israeli" intelligence questioned the collaborator security official of Dibbeen - Blat Sector for three successive days.

The occupation forces impose curfew inside the towns that are under siege…(3)
"Weeks and months have passed on the siege that was imposed by the “"Israeli"” forces on a number of towns in the South and the West Beqaa. Sources from inside the occupied territory say that the “"Israelis"” have yet again changed the rules to others that are stricter on the civilians. The “"Israeli"” forces first allowed citizens over the age of 40 years for men and the over 50 for women to leave their towns only for serious health reasons. It then imposed a night curfew on the inhabitants with orders to shoot at the violators".

"The siege of the town of Al-Mari is in its fifth day. It was noted the reason of the siege was because of the fleeing of one of the inhabitants of the town Wassim Fares Judiyeh to the liberated side after refusing to collaborate with the “"Israelis"”. Mr. Judiyeh fled 24 hours before a meeting that was set for him by “"Israeli"” intelligence officers at Marjeyoun in order to try and force him to collaborate with them".

"Israel" breaks the April understanding once more…(1)
"At around ten o’clock this (yesterday) morning the “"Israeli"” forces broke the April understanding by bombing with various caliber the town of Baraasheit. The bombing resulted in the damage of many houses, while the inhabitants were unharmed as the result of the steps that they undertake during such bombings like moving to the lower floors of their homes. "The “"Israeli"” bombings also reached the outskirts of the towns of Al-Mansouri, Majdal Zoun and Wadi Al-Qaissieh, which led to the breaking out of fires in many farms.

"As their usual tyrannical practice the “"Israelis"” prevented cars belonging to the International Red Cross to enter the town of Yohmor Al-Shkif to transport a seriously ill civilian to the nearest hospital. "The enemy informed the inhabitants that this practice would remain so until further notice, noting that this step violates the Geneva Convention".

"Tensions have risen in southern Lebanon as "Israeli" warplanes and ground troops today (yesterday) attacked areas north of the zone "Israel" occupies. Six civilians, including a five-year-old boy, were injured in "Israeli" attacks on the south yesterday. The five-nation group monitoring a cease-fire in the south is expected to meet on Thursday to discuss Lebanese and "Israeli" complaints of alleged truce violations".

" Six Lebanese, including a five-year-old child and a Hizbullah resistance fighter, were wounded by gunfire from "Israel" and its allies and an air attack in southern Lebanon Sunday. Police said the child, both his parents and another man were hurt when 15 "Israeli" shells hit the village of Mansouri, 11 kilometers south of the coastal city of Tyre, outside the "Israeli"-occupied zone. The Hizbullah member was wounded in the air strike, which also occurred outside the occupied zone. A middle-aged woman, Fatima Ramadan, was hurt when "Israel's" proxy militia machine-gunned her car on her way to the village of Yohmor. The villages of Zibqeen, Kafra, Majdal Zoun and Yater, on the western and central edges of the occupied zone were also raided. Later two "Israeli" fighter-bombers fired four missiles on the edge of Yater, adjoining the occupation zone. According to AFP, so far this year 20 civilians have been killed and 137 wounded in southern Lebanon. "Israel" has constantly targeted residential areas in southern Lebanon, in clear breach of a 1996 internationally-monitored accord which bans attacks on and from civilian targets but permits resistance operations against "Israeli" occupation troops".

"Israel" tightens its grip on the towns that are under siege…(2)
"The towns of Aita Al-Shaab, Bint Jbeil and Al-Mari are still under siege despite the close arrival of the UN secretary general’s envoy to the area. The envoy’s mission will be to inspect the situation of the towns that are under “"Israeli"” occupation.

"In the town of Hula only three of its inhabitants collaborate with the enemy, Imad Shriem, Hussien Musa Ibrahim and Hassan Abdullah Hamoud. The collaborators prevented the inhabitants from leaving the town. While searching the houses the collaborators fires bullets in the air in an effort to scare the inhabitants".
