Israel prolongs detention of Hizbullah leaders
An Israeli court decided on Monday to extend the detention by six
months of two leaders of the Lebanese Hizbullah resistance movement held
for years in Israeli jails. The court made the ruling against Sheikh
Abdel Karim Obeid and Mustapha Dirani on the recommendations of Defense
Minister Yitzhak Mordechai, judicial officials said. Obeid was kidnapped
by Israeli commandos in 1989 while Dirani was seized in a similar operation
in 1994. About 150 Lebanese have been held for several years without charge
or trial in prisons in Israel and its occupied zone in south Lebanon.
Hizbullah spearheads resistance attacks against Israel and the latter's
allied militia aimed at ousting it from a zone they occupy in southern
Lebanon.
