Human rights watch urges investigations into former Israeli allied militia activities
Human Rights Watch has urged Germany and Lebanon to investigate war crimes and abuses committed by Israeli allied militiamen in the former occupied zone as the first group of former fighters and their families arrived for resettlement in Germany. Hanny Megally, the Executive Director of the Middle East and North Africa division in the New York-based human rights watchdog warned that militiamen who committed war crimes should not be granted impunity abroad. In letters addressed to German and Lebanese officials, Human Rights Watch called for the trial of militiamen who committed serious violations of human rights during Israels occupation. Six thousand militiamen and their families fled to the Jewish state following Israels lightening withdrawal from south Lebanon in May. Many of them are seeking refuge in Western nations. Some 2,200 ex-militiamen are standing trial in Beirut. Sentences handed down to collaborators have so far ranged from three weeks to 15 years and the death sentence in absentia.
