30
collaborators tried by military
The trial of 30 people on
charges of collaborating with Israel during its 22-year occupation of the
South opened at a military court on Monday afternoon.
The defendants, all of whom were in custody, were mostly members of
Israels now-defunct proxy militia. Others were civilians who traded
with Israel or traveled to the Jewish state.
The batch of suspects was the 29th since the trials of collaborators started on
June 5, 12 days after Israel completed its pullout from the South.
Presided over by Brigadier Maher Safieddine, the court which has ruled in
more than 1,100 cases has handed down prison terms of up to 15 years and is
due to study around 1,400 other cases.
