Tribunal
continues prosecution of collaborator
In its 20th round of trials
against Israeli collaborators, the Military Tribunal issued sentences
against 39 people on Monday, the maximum being a five-year prison term. The
trials were presided over by Military Judge Maher Safieddine. All those accused
were punished for collaborating with and giving information to the enemy.
Thirteen people accused of joining the former Israeli-proxy militia were also
interrogated. Sentences varied from a three-week prison term to fines ranging
from LL1 million-LL2 million for entering Israel. Among them was a
physician who supervised a militia infirmary in Yarin and contacted
Israeli officers. One man was acquitted for lack of evidence. Last week,
23 people were also questioned about joining the collaborators. The minimum
sentence issued was one year in prison, while all received fines of up to
LL400,000. They were also prohibited from living in villages where they were
born mainly Bint Jbeil, Marjayoun, Hasbaya and Tyre.
First Investigating Magistrate Riad Talih issued 21 arrest warrants against
former militiamen who, after questioning, will stand trial on charges of
collaboration with Israel.
