140
collaborators on trial
The trial of 140 people
charged with collaborating with Israel opened at a military court on
Monday, bringing the number of defendants who have stood trial on such charges
to 544.
The court, presided over by Brigadier Maher Safieddine, questioned the
defendants, most of whom were members of Israels now-defunct proxy
militia.
The other defendants are accused of entering Israel for work or trade. The
court also listened to the closing arguments of military prosecutors and the
defendants lawyers. The verdicts and sentences were expected to be announced
later.
So far, 404 people have been sentenced since the trials began three weeks ago.
Most received one-year jail terms. Some 2,200 suspects were captured or
surrendered to authorities after the withdrawal.
