Court
gives double agent 10-year term |
A military court handed
down sentences to 57 suspects accused of collaboration with Israel on
Tuesday, including one of 10 years to a double agent who turned over his own
sister to the Israelis.
Ibrahim Beydoun, a former member of Israels now-defunct proxy militia
said he went to an Israeli officer after his sister Sonia proposed that he
work as an agent for the resistance.
He testified that the officer gave him a small recording device that taped
everything his sister said, although Beydoun said he eventually destroyed the
recorder and confessed.
Sonia was detained for a few months in the militia controlled Khiam detention
center before being expelled from the occupied zone. He himself was also held at
Khiam for four years.
The military court also forbade Beydoun from entering the former occupied zone
for 10 years after he finishes his prison term.
The other defendants received the usual prison terms of between a few months and
a few years, in addition to orders prohibiting them from returning to their home
areas for several years after they finish serving their sentences.
The court postponed for two weeks consideration of the cases of 63 other alleged
collaborators after their lawyers requested time to study their clients
files. The trials of all suspects opened on Monday.
The latest sentences, handed down overnight, bring to 662 the number of verdicts
reached since the court began holding three weekly sessions on June 5 to try
some 2,200 Lebanese accused of collaborating with Israel.
