Court puts off collaboration trials

The trial of 160 alleged “Israeli” collaborators opened on Wednesday, but 147 cases were postponed until next month at the request of the defense lawyers, who said they needed more time to look into the charges.
Brigadier Maher Safieddine’s court is due to hand down rulings in the 13 remaining cases on Thursday morning. The defendants were all charged with providing security information to “Israeli” agents.
The defendants included two Iraqis, Qais Mahmoud and Akram Khalaf, and Indian national Zaid Khan. They are accused of spying on inmates during their stints in Roumieh Prison.
They allegedly sent reports to “Israeli” agents via intermediaries.
Since June 5, the court has held 24 sessions to try alleged collaborators and former members of “Israel’s” militia. It has ruled in 1,005 cases, while more than 1,500 defendants are awaiting trial.
