Tribunal tries 40 more collaborators |
The trial of 40 people charged with collaborating with Israel opened at a military court on Monday. Most suspects were members of Israels now-defunct proxy militia.
With Brigadier Maher
Safieddine presiding, the tribunal questioned suspects, who argued that they
worked with the militia or in Israel because they had no other way to
secure their livelihoods.
After listening to closing arguments by military prosecutors and defense
lawyers, the court adjourned the trials, which were expected to resume around
midnight to hand down the verdicts and sentences.
Since it opened on June 5, convening three times a week, the court has handed
down 691 verdicts. Some 2,200 people have been accused of collaborating with
Israel.
